In the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, many prejudices are shown. They are from a wide spectrum of ideas, such as racism, stereotypes, having customs and ways, and just anything different from what the person believes.

In order for a person to think in terms of stereotypes, there has to be information that they don't know, or a want for things to stay the same as they were. For example, Scout, Jem and Dill were worried about Boo Radley. They play a game and made up stories. They say he is bad and scary, since they have never seen him. Mr. Radley turned out to be all right. He was not some evil monstrous guy, but he was just a shy, nice man. Or, another example might be the way that the Ewells acted and how they treated the other people of Maycomb County. They were truants to school, and only came for the first day. They had their way of getting through the law. Also, they were known for their poverty and living off of the governments funding because their father spent all his money on alcohol.

People who think stereotypically tend to cling to their ideas because they don't know any different. The people of Maycomb County thought that black people were lower than them. So, when Atticus Finch was appointed to represent the black defendant, Tom Robinson, the people were surprised. But, Atticus still received a lot of trouble from the white people for representing him. Atticus still kept his head up high, because of his sense of justice and integrity.

It takes a lot of work for a person to overcome their stereotypic thinking. It is my belief, that when some of the misconceptions of theirs are cleared, they stop their stereotypes. For example, throughout the book the children were prejudiced in their view of Boo Radley. Finally, when Boo saved Jem and Scout when they were coming home from the celebration, the stereotypes were gone; they no long thought of Boo as such an odd person, who you might act out. Rather he was a friend.

It is to my belief that these years of the Tom Robinson case, the kids will be better and very different from it. They might become more understanding of people who are different from them. They learned things most kids don't learn, like how people who are different can still be your friend.
