A/N: Written as a birthday present for JoeCool89. Happy birthday! I hope you enjoy.
Regulus shouldn't have been jealous. It wasn't as though he didn't know James was head over heels in love with Evans when they began their secret meetings. He knew that James wouldn't stop chasing after the Mudblood for him. Maybe he even knew the two of them would get together in the end, that James would outgrow Regulus.
But, as he sat there in the library, his eyes roamed from his essay and rested upon the happy couple. James smiled and laughed at something Evans did or said, and bitter envy swelled within the Slytherin. It should have been him, not her, that made James laugh like that.
Regulus was perfect for him. He had never judged James for his warped sense of humor. Even in the brutally competitive atmosphere of the Quidditch pitch, Regulus had never insulted James the way the Mudblood had in the
past.
It should have been him. It wasn't fair!
The Gryffindors climbed to their feet and started forward. As he passed by Regulus, James let a crumpled scrap of parchment fall to the table without sparing the younger boy so much as a passing glance.
Heart racing, Regulus unfolded the note, smoothing out the creases as best he could. A small smile twisted his lips
as he read the sloppy writing.
I miss you. The usual place, the usual time?
Maybe there was hope after all.
