The Dark Talon

He stood upon the highest pillar in the forest, broad arms folded about the chest of his uniform. A breeze blew up the material of his dark scarf, touching at his neck, but he ignored it. It was just him and the plentiful sounds of nature that he had accustomed himself to. Just the way he liked it.

His shades made day almost seem like night as he watched the horizon before the caw caught his attention. Head rising, he searched for the source of that familiar cry.

There it was, flapping its feathered wings, soaring free in the air, a creature that once had him fleeing away in fear in his youth. But not this time, as it perched itself along an overhanging branch nearest him. It turned its piercing red eyes at him, seeming to not mind his presence. He just stared, immobile and undaunted by what he had now become, embracing his new identity.

The position he stood in was like his nest, and he guarded it just as well as his counterpart did theirs. The blades holstered within his uniform acted as his talons. With them, he would cut his enemies as well as his prey during a hunt in just a single ring that would be their only warning before death. Yes… death. A name only a few knew him by.

He smirked at how much he had changed, at how he was no longer an ordinary man. The training passed down to him had served him well and he would use it just as asked. Fear was once his enemy and now it had become his greatest ally against those he sought after.

Then he sensed it, the storm clouds rolling in with the looming darkness that aided him. Not long before the thunder rumbled and the clouds wept, scaring away nature's creatures into hiding. The tree branches began to tremble with the leaves, that enormous wind starting to blow in his direction as the lightning flashed.

His counterpart took off into the air and he nodded in acknowledgment to do the same. He then spread his wings as the signal buzzed in his ear as if on cue. A few long ranged leaps from pillar to pillar and a flip sent him spiraling into the air with nothing below to catch his fall. The world seemed to spin in a blur as he realized this, but he knew this was intentional.

Then came the familiar whir of the mechanical beast he rode upon as his feet landed, taking him into the skies to soar as his counterpart did, to whatever destiny that awaited him.
