Title: Chief's Guardian

Author: kazokuhouou

Pairing: Implied Matsuda/Soichiro

Rating: PG-13 for suicide attempt and swearing. POSSIBLE OOC. Honestly, I don't know, don't care.

It was going to kill him.

Ever since the Kira investigation was closed, everyone noticed a marked difference in Chief Soichiro Yagami. They thought they knew the reason: Kira took his only son's life.

Only a select few knew the truth: That his son Light was Kira.

Knowing your son was an unrepentant mass murderer would drive even the happiest soul to depression, and Soichiro was no saint. Tota Matsuda couldn't evenbegin to imagine how that feels. All he knows from the outsider's perspective is that it couldn't go on like this. Soichiro was emotionally distant and cold to everyone, he stayed late nights before going home, if he even did, and his relationship with his wife and daughter was strained to the point that they hardly talked to him.

And it scared Matsuda how utterly dead his eyes looked.

Matsuda blew the hair out of his eyes as he leaned back in his chair. He hated doing paperwork, especially when it kept him at work later than anyone else. He looked at the stack of work he did, the sizable amount of work he still had to do, and finally went "fuck it". He'll do the rest tomorrow.

As Matsuda gathered his things, he thought he heard footsteps inside the chief's office. He initially thought nothing of it, but he did have to pass the office door to leave. A damned good thing, too, or he never would have heard a gun being primed. Without thinking, Matsuda threw the door open.

Soichiro barely had time to look startled before Matsuda grabbed the gun from his hand, removing the single bullet and throwing said bullet to the side. He let the gun fall to the floor as he looked at the chief with a look of utter fear in his eyes. Soichiro looked back at Matsuda with as much composure as one could muster when caught in a suicide attempt.

Unable to think of anything he could do other than what he's doing now, Matsuda wrapped his arms around Soichiro. Soichiro let him, his face in Matsuda's shoulder. Matsuda wasn't wearing his suit jacket, so it took little time before Matsuda felt tears soaking his shirt. At that point, his heart broke. There were no loud sobs of a father who had to bury his child, just the silent tears of a broken man.

"Chief." And here Matsuda had to clear his throat. "Chief, I'm no psychologist, but I know what happened, and it hurts seeing you like this, and if you wanted to talk to someone I'm here and willing to listen but damnit, Chief, don't kill yourself " Mildly melodramatic, yes, but it did get Soichiro to pick up his head.

"Matsuda?"

"Too many people care about you. Or, at least, I care," Matsuda added, biting his lip and not quite meeting Soichiro's eyes.

Nothing was said for a few minutes, until Soichiro leaned back on his heels in a position eerily like Ryuzaki's. (Matsuda isn't even entirely sure when they fell on their knees.) He gave him a small smile.

"You'll listen?" Matsuda nodded. Soichiro got up and held out a hand to help Matsuda up, which he was glad to take. "Where at?"

"My apartment?"

"Good." Soichiro holstered his gun and they both grabbed their coats. Matsuda let Soichiro to his apartment.

And maybe Soichiro Yagami will never fully recover, and maybe some things just can't be fixed, and maybe Tota Matsuda will have to be his chief's soundboard for the rest of their lives.

But it's a start.
