She gets into her dorm, scrolling down her phone, and then she sees him, sitting at the edge of her bed.
However, she manages to hide her surprise. After last night, she wants nothing but to stay away from him.
"Hey." He says shortly, as he gets up and walks toward her.
"What are you doing here?" she asks.
"You're ignoring my calls." He says with his head titled.
"My phone was off, I just turned it on." She says, her voice cold and harsh, completely the opposite from what she feels.
She hates herself for this, being hard with him. She wonders how they got to this; from best friends talking about everything, to two people can't even talk for two minutes without fighting.
But he left her no choice; she made her choice, it turned out that crying herself to sleep for an hour, was enough for her to stop fighting. As she wiped her tears, she cursed herself for crying over him again. She felt mad and anger; she had enough from people hurting her. So, she made her choice that no one, Even Stefan deserves her pain. And the only solution was moving on, from him.
He sighs heavily and looks away; he can tell that she wasn't gonna make it easy for him. But didn't he deserve it?
"Caroline, we need to talk."
"We already have; last night, remember?" she says, crossing her arms to her chest.
"Yeah, well you actually walked away before we finish."
"It sucks, doesn't it? to watch someone walk away from you?" she narrows her eyes at him. They fell into silence for a moment, just looking at each other, their eyes never leaving each other.
And for a moment he gets into her, those eyes, looking guilty and ashamed, and those lips holding a lot of words. But she shakes that feeling away. She breaks the eye contact and licks her lips before talking.
"We talked Stefan. And I think I made it clear, there is nothing else to talk about."
"So that's it? We just gonna stop being friends?" he says, his eyes showing more pain. He feels his stomach twist as the words sink into him.
Her face falls for barley a second, her eyes almost waters. But she hides it quickly. in a second she sees the last few years playing in her head, she sees them dancing in the prom, she sees them walking through the forest, she sees them sitting next to the fire, she sees them sleeping in that car, she can even feel his hand on herwrist. But then she sees him telling her he never listened to her messages, she sees him with Ivy "moving on", she sees him walking away after she told him to stay, she sees him wanting to be friendsagain.
Then she swallows it all and looks at him in the eye, "Yup." It comes out just like that, cold, hard.
His eyes don't leave her, they are trying, so hard to get to her. For a second he sees her eyes giving up, surrendering to him. But it is all replaced with this cold look.
He wants to say something, anything. But he finds himself walking to the door. She hears him opening it and she closes her eyes without turning around. She waits to hear his footsteps walking away. But she doesn't, and he doesn't leave. He stays in there, holding the door and looking at her. And she can feel his eyes on her, so she closes her eyes more toughly.
He wants her to say something, anything. He wishes if she say "Stay."; because now, he would give anything away to stay. But she had already said it before, and he left. So he knows it is his turn, it is his turn to fight for her, to never give up on her, to make her stay.
He doesn't say it out loud. But he promises to get her back. He might be leaving now, but he will stay around, to pull her back.
