They were the nations. They were the personifications of nations, strolling among their people, laughing, talking, and seeming to live the exact same life as the rest of them did.

But really, they weren't. They had seen people die, knew that these people would die as well, fading out long before they even began to look old.

That was why they stuck together, why they got together and talked to each other despite the anger and hatred they held for one another. Because the rest could understand. Some could understand better then others- France was more likely to know what Englnad was talking about then China did, and China would better be able to understand Japan's quietness and the words left unsaid.

But they all understood each other, just like they understood the one thing that led them on- they were simply puppets on a string.

Puppets to be commanded at will, puppets that had no real free will.

The useless meeting were indeed useless because in the end, the countries couldn't decide on anything- it was up to the people and their bosses. Feelings that the nations themselves felt, and the feelings of the people were mixed, intricate, unbreakable.

The people of America wanted freedom- America wanted freedom. The people of Japan wanted to strike against America, Japan struck out against America. The people of Germany wanted food, clothing, and blamed the Jews viciously for stealing all of the jobs. Germany allowed atrocities to happen.

They really could do nothing, because it was simply impossible. The country's people decided for themselves on what they would do in the future- all the Nations could do would be to simply go along with the people.

It was the people that did the atrocities.

It was the people that helped one another.

It was the people that made the alliances.

It was the people that broke the alliances.

That was why Germany didn't say anything when Italy turned over to the Allies. It was why Spain didn't hold grudges. It was why they didn't kill each other on first sight because of all the broken alliances, and the wars, and the killing from each nation.

Because in the end all they had were each other, and they all knew that there would be many more bloody wars, many more atrocities, and one day they too would probably fall and break.

Until that day they simply lived- because even living was impossible for them to control.

a/n: My gosh, angsty little ficlet, isn't this? Truthfully, I came up with this, and its been bouncing around my head ever since then. I don't think the nations quite have as much control over themselves as they would like- poor dears. Please review!
