Face of the Devil
A Final Fantasy VII Fanfiction by efli riLvcuE
You. I admired you. I looked up to you. I worshipped you. But then, we all did. I was so excited when Zack managed to get me attached to your unit. You were the epitome of everything ShinRa claimed to stand for – protecting the weak and helpless with it's tremendous power. But you betrayed all that. You used to be a hero. You used to be worshipped like a God. Why couldn't you be happy with that?
But…I know why. Jenova tricked you. You believed she was the last Ancient. You, one of the greatest beings ever to walk the earth, had finally found something to look up to. But you looked down on everyone else, slaughtered an entire town like cattle, burnt it to the ground.
You killed my mother there. My entire family, gone, in one swift stroke of your gleaming sword. I had nothing left to me then. The Sephiroth that I had looked up to like a father was gone, forever. My mother was burning in the ruins of Nibelheim. When you turned into those flames, I beheld the face of the devil himself. More than human. Less than human. Completely alien.
I don't remember staggering up the grey rock of Mount Nibel, I must have blanked out as I struggled, wounded and bleeding, through that cold night to where I knew you would go. You were going to see your mother.
The first thing I remember seeing was Zack, lying bleeding where you had left him. And nearby, Tifa. The girl that I loved, and the man I trusted as a brother, both gone. Both injured so badly I feared I would never see them again. That sword, and the…thing wielding it, had taken away everything I held dear. I scarcely noticed when you passed by.
In a ghost of a whisper, Zack told me to kill you. With my eyes fogged with tears and my mind fogged with pain, I lurched after you. Traces of a smile played on your lips, and you ran me through with the sword that no-one else could wield. Something snapped…and I lifted the sword, even though every inch I heaved it caused me pain indescribable. The look on your face as you fell into the pit…rage, frustration…and something else. You looked cheated. I would have laughed then at the irony of you looking cheated, but I passed out. And the next I knew, I was bombarded with Jenova. Made to be like you. Made to be a 'clone' of the man I knew to be a demon.
But now, I feel the Jenova running through my veins, even though it's source lies still and lifeless far above our heads. And my mind still goes back to that day, five years ago…
I killed you then. I can do it now. We share the same flesh, and that is the power I will harness. You embraced it, but I have denied it. And I will face the devil, the demon, the fallen seraphim, the angel who wanted to be a god.
I know you for what you are. And that is why I cannot let you live. I killed your mother, as you did mine. It is time, Sephiroth. Time to die.
