A soft breeze ruffled the leaves above their heads. Shafts of golden sunlight gleamed between branches. The tree trunk was rough against Kazahaya's back.

"There's a legend about this tree," Rikuo told him. "You're supposed to send a message to the person you like to meet you here. And then…"

"So what are we doing here?" Kazahaya demanded. Rikuo leaned close. "What do you think… Kazahaya?" he whispered. And suddenly he was kissing him.

Kazahaya didn't know what to do. He tried to pull away, but Rikuo was a lot stronger. He put his arms around the smaller boy and held him tightly.

"You really are stupid, aren't you, Kazahaya?" Rikuo murmured. Somehow it didn't seem insulting as Kazahaya normally found it.

Suddenly, Rikuo was gone. Bewildered, Kazahaya looked around. The trees surrounding him seemed much bigger and darker than before.

"Why, Kazahaya?"

Kazahaya whipped around. There was Kei, her eyes blazing.

"Kei–"

"What were you thinking? Why'd you do it?"

"I'm sorry, Kei, i–"

"Why did you kiss him, Kazahaya?" she demanded.

"It's not what you think, Kei! I don't–"

"You made a promise!" Kei shouted. "You promised me! Or did you forget?"

"No," whispered Kazahaya. "I couldn't…"

"Did you forget your promise, Kazahaya? Or did you forget your sister?"

"No," he said. "I could never forget you, Kei."

"Then why did you disappear?" Kei cried. "You disappeared, just like the wind!"

"I had to!" he wailed. If i had stayed–"

"That's not important," Kei said. "You should have stayed. You promised."

"I didn't want to go," Kazahaya said sadly.

"Liar!" Kei hissed. Flames sprung up around her. "You left because of him, didn't you?" She pointed at Rikuo, who was standing off to the side. He stared at Kazahaya with an inscrutable expression.

"No, Kei! I didn't even know him when i left!"

"Liar!" She screamed, and this time the flames blazed brighter.

"Kei!" he cried, and took a step toward her. The flames weren't burning her, he realized. They were part of her. Kei. Fire.

"Kei…"

He didn't know what he was doing. He didn't even know what he could do. The air felt like mud.

"Maybe i'll kill him," Kei said dramatically. "What'll you do if i kill him, Kazahaya? Will you come back? You will come back, won't you? You won't have any reason to stay away."

"No!" Kazahaya pleaded. "Please! That's not why i left, Kei! I promise!"

The flames around his sister died down a little. "But you always break your promises, Kazahaya," she whispered.

Kazahaya was about to say something, he was sure of it, but instead he opened his eyes with a start, gasping. He was in his bed, in the apartment above the store. It had all been a dream.

Sighing, he sat up and hugged his knees to his chest. Where had that dream come from? He thought about Kei every day, but he hadn't dreamed about her for a while. And this was the first time his dream had been so… scary.

And where the hell had that bit with Rikuo come from? He certainly didn't think of his coworker like that. Did he?

Suddenly his head shot up as he remembered something. He had been at that tree before. And Rikuo had been there, too, acting… almost exactly the way he had in the dream. They had only been pretending for a job, but still.

Kazahaya's shoulders slumped. That was where it had come from. "Damn it," he muttered, resting his head on his knees. "That stupid school's even corrupting my dreams now."

He really, really hoped he hadn't disturbed Rikuo.

A/N: Wow, this seemed much better when it was on paper. Now that i've typed it... i dunno. Sorry about the abruptness of the end, but dreams are like that. It drives me crazy when i have a good one. (Also, i had no more ideas to continue past that point.)
