A.N: I really wanted to emphasize the bond between Narcissa and Draco that I feel wasn't present enough in the series until book six.
"Mummy, how come daddy isn't ever home? And when he is, why is he mean to me?" A 10 year-old Draco Malfoy asked his mother, his eyes starting to tear. He looked up at his mother, who was trying so hard to fake a smile, even though her heart was breaking.
"Daddy is, err, doing work with a very, um, important man sweetie." Narcissa tried to explain best she could, in a way a 10 year old would understand.
"But why is he always meant?" Draco asked, the tears now streaming down his little face. Narcissa was on the brink of losing it now. She hated seeing her son in pain. She loved him more than anything in the world, and would gladly die for him.
"Honey, daddy is not trying to be mean. You see, he loves you, but, h-he doesn't know how to show it." She knew Lucius probably did not care for Draco, but she could not bear to tell him this now. When he was older he would understand. She looked to see him, head hung down low, still crying. "Can I tell you something honey?"
"What is it, mummy?" his voice was small and barley audible
"I love you. And I always will. You're my only baby. I will do everything I can to keep you safe." She picked him up and gave him a big hug. He clinged on to her, not wanting to let go.
"I love you too mummy, but I have another question."
"Go on…" She prompted, worried about what more he could possibly ask.
"What does Aunt Bella mean when she says I will get too someday?" Draco's eyes were big and curious, looking at his mother's expression-less face. She pulled herself together and simply replied,
"It's an, err, gift of some sort, that you will receive someday, when you are older. Now come on, let's get ready for bed."
"Ok!" He replied and took her hand as they walked towards his little room. Little did Narcissa know, that in a few years come, Draco's "Gift" would arrive, and take away his childhood.
