The Extension

Alice Margatroid was interrupted from her work by the sounds of banging. "What's Marisa up to now?" she thought. She followed the sounds and found that they seemed to be coming from just outside the house. Much to her surprise, she found a team of carpenters out there, seemingly about to work on her house. "Whoa, what's this all about?!" she cried.
"We were commissioned to build an extension on this house," the head carpenter replied, "Are you the homeowner?"
"That I am. Hold on a moment; I think I know where this commission came from…" She went back inside and found Marisa. "Excuse me, but do you have a problem with the size of my house?" she demanded.
"No, it's a beautiful house, plenty of room for us to coexist. Why do you ask?"
"Because there is a team of carpenters outside saying they were commissioned to build an extension. Care to explain that?"
"Oh, right… Well, I've always operated my store out of my home, y'know? And this is my home now. And, well, I didn't want to clutter up your nice neat house with all of my junk, so…I decided to append the store onto the side of it. Sorry about that…"
Alice sighed. "I'll see if they can move their plans so it's not attached. Certainly it won't matter if your new store is just a few feet away, right?"
"Of course it won't."
Unfortunately, it was not so easy, as they had not brought enough lumber to create all four walls. "We can scrap the plans for an interior door if you like," the carpenter offered.
"No, no," Alice said, "there are windows on that wall, anyway.
"But that would be a lot of doors, if we put one everywhere a window was," Marisa said, "I was thinking we'd just keep the blinds closed over the first-floor window most of the time, have the door on the second floor."
"S-Second floor?"
"Well, yeah, that would mostly just be a storeroom…the 'employees only' section, so to speak. Of course, I'm the only one who works there…"
"Sometimes I wonder why I put up with you, Marisa."
"Is it because I—" she whispered something to Alice so that the carpenters couldn't hear.
Alice blushed. "You wouldn't necessarily have to be living here for that," she said, embarrassed.
"Well then, it must just be because you're madly in love with me and can't live without me."
"Ah, right. Yes, that's a very good reason."
"So, are we building this thing or not?"
"Yeah, go for it. Just try not to mess up my house too much." This earned Alice a passionate kiss from Marisa. "C'mon, you could at least wait until we get inside," she protested, pulling away.
"Just wanted to show you how happy you make me. I realize I've been kind of…demanding, and probably not the easiest person to live with."
"If it were anyone else, I probably would have kicked them out long ago. But you're not anyone else. You're you, and I…love you."
"I know. I love you too."
CCX: Yes, yes, these stories are getting more and more banal. This is the way my mind works, sadly. Until next time...ja ne!
