It Could Be Simple
Summary: "Did you sleep with him?" Her momentary silence is all the confirmation he needs. "No. Of course not." Her nose scrunches up in the way that it does when she thinks he's being ridiculous. But, she almost says, I wanted to. I'd hoped to. 10 reasons why Chase should probably break up with Cameron.
A/N: I like Chase and Cameron together, but I thought of this when I saw the promo for "Saviors".
1.
"Did you sleep with him?"
Cameron's momentary silence is all the confirmation he needs.
"No."
Her nose scrunches up in the way that it does when she thinks he's being ridiculous. But she falters. "Of course not." But, she almost says, I wanted to. I'd hoped to.
She looks away. He nods.
2.
It isn't the same, being the head of a department as it is having the privilege of working under the best diagnostician in the country—at least not for her. He knows this, and it's hard to ignore it, to understand it.
It will never be the same and she will always miss it.
3.
Really, the dresser was just a show. Given to him in a vain attempt to make things right but mostly just to prove House wrong. She will always be that naïve and nubile girl fresh out of med school and needing to prove something to House.
She will always need his approval, his opinion.
And that is not something Chase has the ability to change; he's not oblivious enough to think that he has that power.
4.
The first time they slept together, she was high and he was stupid, far too hopeful. It probably should have been the last time that happened, ever, but once again, he was stupid.
5.
He will never tell her, but he's always had a thing for brunettes. He hates the fact that they now look like a matching set.
6.
She slips into Cuddy's role as administrator like it's something she's been waiting for. He knows that it is less about having an opportunity to move up in her job and more about seeing if the pull between House and Cuddy is simply based on a game of usurping authority, an adult version of cat and mouse.
It isn't, and he knows that that surprises her, confuses her that the two of them really are wrapped up in each other in a way that she will never understand.
He also knows, it's part of the reason why she quits.
7.
He knows her a lot better than she thinks he does.
8.
She will always say yes to House.
With Chase, she can barely even muster up the courage to say how she truly feels—it takes months of pursuit for her to agree to date him, years of dating for them to move in together. But when it comes to House, there is a certain conviction that she won't deny, that she will always give in to.
9.
On one of the rare nights where he actually stays over at her place, he stumbles upon a crumpled ticket stub to a Monster Trucks show. It clearly hasn't made an appearance in a while, but it also, very clearly, has not been forgotten, either.
10.
"Are you in love with House?"
Being direct has never seemed to work for him but he guesses Cuddy will have more luck asking about what actually is, rather than what could be. The pause she takes is too uncertain, the breath she sighs too unstable and shaky. "I—No. I'm not."
Or maybe not.
