"He wants to say I love you
But he keeps it to goodnight
Because love will mean some falling
And she's afraid of heights."
"Thanks... for everything. Really. Thanks." was all she managed to say. He was looking at her in a way that made her doubt everything she knew. He did it all the time, more often lately, if she thought about it. He nodded. His eyes squinted, and his lips pursed. Her heart beat increased so radically that she could no longer use counting beats per minute as a distraction. He wanted to tell her. He wanted to scream and shake her until she understood. He opened his mouth as if to say something. She watched as determination, then doubt, then resignation flashed across his face. He couldn't let anyone hurt her. His mouth fell shut as he took in a breath. He released the air so slowly that she was sure time had stopped. If he told her, he might as well push her off a cliff and watch as she fell. Watch the pain, the hurt, the death in her eyes... the betrayal. "Goodnight." he said calmly. She watched as he turned, his fists clenched, every muscle tensed, and walked down the hallway - escaping into the harsh air of a winter's night. As the cold air hit his face, he didn't know what to do. He wanted to cry and scream and ruin everything that looked like it wasn't already broken. As he looked around for anything he could smash to pieces, break into oblivion, he realized he couldn't see a single thing. He couldn't find one thing that wasn't already broken... that wasn't already used and torn and out of hope. As she watched him finally walk down the street through her window, she swore she had just witnessed the last of a man's hope falling from a great height and smashing into the unforgiving earth below.
P/S. Let me know what you thought about this. I might continue it if you guys like it. It just kind of happened, so, just let me know. :)
