It was a gentle summer evening when Kurt came over to Rachel's to suggest they go out for the evening. They had driven to a wooded area Rachel had never noticed before, just off the highway. They spread a blanket on a large grassy hill on the outskirts of the city and was getting ready to sit down when Kurt remembered the sparkling grape juice he had left in the car. The wind was blowing through the trees just enough that it was caressing Rachel's tresses as Kurt jogged back up the hill. She pushed her hair back behind her ears with a smile as Kurt say back down and opened one of the bottles. They were far enough away they could see the stars, but close enough to see the warm city lights still shining in the darkness.
"I can smell the rain from here," she said with a sigh. Kurt nodded towards the horizon.
"We should be able to watch it storm over the city from here. Really hoping it doesn't turn south or we'll be drenched."
"Amazing how it's starry here, but clouded over Lima."
"The night is mysterious," said Kurt with a small smirk.
"This was a wonderful idea," said Rachel as she took a sip from her glass. "I would have never thought about a picnic at night outside of the city."
"I thought it'd be good to get away from it all," Kurt said, waving his hand.
"I love it," she said breathlessly. "You have the best ideas."
"You did everything else," said Kurt. They could hear the rumble of thunder in the distance.
"It was just a quick run to market," shrugged Rachel. Kurt reached for the picnic basket to start setting out their dinner.
"I'm happy… you're happy with me," said Rachel. "I know this isn't easy for you."
"You either," said Kurt. They both frowned at the thought between them that was being left unsaid. "He…"
"No… don't Kurt. It feels right," broke in Rachel. She ran a hand down Kurt's cheek.
"I'm glad we came here." She laid her head on his shoulder. Thunder rumbled again, closer this time.
"Lightning," said Kurt softly as he gestured to the distance. Rachel shivered as they watched it streak through the clouds. Even if they had checked and triple-checked the forecast, it was still a little unnerving to be outside in the weather. The air around them was still and quiet, almost as if it was waiting on something. There was very little traffic on the road at the bottom of the hill.
"Although I'm not sure if this is romantic as you thought it'd be," she said a little sarcastically, stealing a glance up at him with a small smirk. Kurt took a sip from his own glass.
"At least we still have the stars, even if everyone else is getting rained on."
Rachel laughed at that, giggling behind her hand. Kurt hesitantly wrapped his arm around her. They sat and watched the lighter grey clouds as they slowly made their way across the sky. It was the only ones visible in the dark.
"The contrast is beautiful," he said. The brunette agreed, enjoying the warmth of Kurt beside her. She snuggled closer.
"I'm glad we can see the stars."
