A/N: This is a continuation of 'Gardens of Memories' kind of. Really it's Mei's background story.

I didn't chose to live here, right?
My parents died in a car wreck. My brothers and I were separated by the government, which sent me to Japan to live with my uncle. My uncle was a drunk and a gambler. He ended up gambling away the house and ran off. When the people came to collect they gave me an hour to pack and leave.
That's how I got on this road with a duffle bag of my belongings and my coat. I kept my head down as each car passed. One of the cars slowed down and turned around. Just to make it worse the driver parked behind me and got out of the car. Just from small glances I could tell he was a youkai.
"Girl!" I turned my head to look at him. He looked familiar, maybe a famous person, but I couldn't tell in this light. "Come on, it's about to storm. Your parents wouldn't want you to catch a cold, right?" He had to mention my parents I guess, part of the package to get me to trust him was to act like a parent. When I looked up he was right, it was about to pour.
"Okay," I whispered and followed him back to his car where a woman and two other teenagers waited.
"Hey!" One of the boys smiled at me. "You go to our school. Kai." He offered me his hand. With my eyesight it took a second before I could guess where his hand was and shake it.
"Hello." I said quietly, somewhat relieved that I knew someone there rather than being a complete stranger. "Mei. That's what everyone has called me."
"You go to the same school?" The woman turned to us, smiling. "That means you're the new transfer student, right?"
I nodded.
"What're you doing walking on the side on the road honey? You might've got hit." Some light went to her eyes. "You're not a running away are you?"
I shook my head, no.
"They weren't joking. You are a quiet person." She touched my knee. "You can stay with us for a while, till you get everything sorted out."
"Thank you."
And that is how I gained a new home after everything that happened.
