It was 7:00 in the morning when they arrived at the convention center, welcomed by an effulgent golden chandelier dangling over the atrium of the hall. After Neville bought them tickets, he dragged Luna by the hand over to the balcony, where he could see down to the underground floors as well as upper floors of the glass building, completely crowded with people.
"Whoa," said Neville softly, having to repeat himself louder when Luna asked what he had said. It was impossible to hear over the din of feet walking, people talking, and sound effects pealing from stands. "It's everything I imagined and more." Seeing the blasé expression on his girlfriend's face, Neville took her hand and looked into her eyes, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead. "Where do you want to go first?"
"Oh, um, I don't know much about this place, where do you want to go?" answered Luna.
"Let's go buy some merch at one of the stands, maybe they have people signing scripts!"
And so began their day at the convention center. Neville bought practically everything in sight: apparel, posters, DVDs, and more. Strangely, Luna didn't request anything, or even seem to take interest in one of the programs, and meet 'n greets available. Neville couldn't imagine why. He was having a great time, and he showed Luna everything, explaining the stories as he went along. She nodded and smiled genuinely at him, but didn't say a word.
By 8:00 at night the booths were beginning to be taken down, and the fans had started to depart, first in groups of two or three, then larger parties. Neville realized that it had been a long day, and told Luna that he was ready to go.
"Oh, gre─ are you sure?" she mumbled uncertainly, leaning against the railing.
"Were you about to say oh, great? Like great as in you're disappointed, or great as in you're happy we're leaving?" asked Neville, laughing. "Ha ha, it couldn't have been the last one, everyone loves the convention!"
Luna couldn't meet his eyes. She bit her lip like she was trying not to give something away.
"You did have fun, right?" he asked, unsure on this account for the first time that entire day.
"Oh─ of course," she told him, putting on a satisfied smile. "Like you said, everyone loves the convention! I─ I had a great time." Her hands fumbled and one lifted to put a hand on his shoulder, rubbing it in soft strokes. She was still smiling, but something about it seemed wrong. Was it something he had said? He was puzzled.
That's when Neville realized that maybe Luna didn't love Star Trek like he did.
