The Platypus and the Rainbow
--
He was too beautiful. Perfectly considerate, and refreshing like cool breezes that swept by slowly; breezes that kissed at her face delicately whilst they tenderly and romantically moved her surroundings; gentler than candlelight... prettier than porcelain dolls or mannequins, sweeter than sugar cubes or cotton candy, a touch more feathery than her very own clouds in her very own dreams. Beautiful, thoughtful, kindhearted – and perfect; pure perfection in his lotion-fed fingertips, in his soft, delicate lips, in his sparkling eyes; his voice a mere droplet in comparison to someone like Manabe – but she savored every moment of that mere droplet. He was a delightful phenomenon – remarkably similar to rain, alighting upon the dry earth in watery sheets like some messiah come to fill its portion of a mystical bargain. Rain smelt like heaven should have; he smelt like heaven should have. Following rain came another notable phenomenon, though – and that was a rainbow. A mere rainbow, whose rays are more delicate than sunlight; whose vivid color scheme makes even the grayest of skies seem bearable...
… He was a goddamn rainbow…
So different from her, whose shoes were caked with mud. She, like her apartment, was an inexcusable mess. She, like her mother had told her several times before, was dull. She was boring – like infomercials or spelling bees. She was clumsy and unattractive, like vermin staggering in the dark. Machi, like a platypus, was purse-lipped and beady-eyed; she was rough and unpolished with unmanageable hair. She was fidgety and misanthropic and a complete waste of everyone's time. A complete waste of his time. Because something as little as a platypus could never be good enough for something as spectacular as a rainbow.
… And he was a dazzling rainbow…
… And she was a little platypus…

Author's Note: Just a drabble to practice some of my writing skills… D; Yes, I know – I lack them. I lack them so much. But Creative Writing is doing so little for me and I needed to write something acceptable. This, unfortunately, was the closest I got. Forgive me, Natsuki Takaya, if I have used your characters badly.
Thank you for reading, darlings; expect more drabbles coming your way soon…
