He start to notice a change right away. The sadistic glee from killing Igor, his obsession with Potter and his sudden lack of love towards him. Severus did not understand, they had promised each other their futures and that they would alway love one another, why this sudden change.
He would watch his lover crucio everyone, whether they had done something wrong or not. Worrying out of his mind Severus became determined to find what had changed his lover.
After researching every book he could, and maybe a little snooping into his lovers private sectors, Severus became alarmed. Tom, his one true love had split his soul to create horcruxes. This splitting of his soul had torn through his mind, destroying everything it could, leaving Tom a heartless and unmerciful murderer.
Severus was shocked to find out that the damaged to Tom's mind could never be undone, it was too severe.
Heartbroken Severus forced himself to head to the deatheater meeting.
The meeting started of the same, with everyone giving their reports of any Order of the phoenix activity, when suddenly Tom changed direction. He demanded every piece of information he could out of Severus and was unsatisfied with what severus could tell him. Enraged he fired a crucio trapping Severus and a world of pain.
Under the effect of the crucio Severus realised there was nothing he could do to save his lover from himself, but after locking eyes with Tom, he decided he could make whatever time with Tom he had left the best possible.
Severus spent the next year doing everything possible to keep his lover happy and mildly sane. He would make sure everyone had something to tell Tom for the meeting, so he would not be as tempted to crucio everyone. He made a point of spending as much time he could with Tom as possible and he put every effort into trying to find a cruce, he refused to give up.
One year after Tom's official return he and Severus laid side by side in their bed. Tom had been having an especially bad week, killing two of his deatheaters and injuring many others. Severus could tell that the last few string in Tom's mind were about to snap.
Surprisingly Tom looked over to Severus, with a look of love not bestowed on his face in almost a year. " I want to apologize Severus, I know I have been awful to everyone since I got back"
"It alright Tom, its not your fault," Severus said with a shaky voice.
"Yes it is, I made those stupid horcruxes, if I hadn't I would have been a better lover to you," Tom admitted.
"You didn't realise what you were doing,' Severus said.
"But I should have"
"There is nothing we can do now but enjoy our last bit of time together"
"I hope you can forgive me," Pleaded Tom.
"There was never any need for forgiveness" Severus smiled sadly.
"I love you" Tom whispered.
" I love you too" Severus said in a hushed tone.
Giving his lover one final kiss goodbye, Severus watch his love's eyes close and a single tear fell down his chin.
