A/N: Hey guys this is my first Katniss/Peeta fanfiction. I'm a big big fan of not only The Hunger Games but Peeniss/Everlark so please read this and leave a review, I accept anon.
It was a barren land now, there wasn't anything for Katniss here anymore and yet something had compelled her to go back. Her mum had left the district that had too many painful memories of Prim and her dad, Gale had left for a richer job, logically she should've left too. For days she wandered around within the district aimlessly, trying to regain some sense of purpose again. She was sitting down eating breakfast when Greasy Sae payed her a visit.
"Hey Katniss."
"What's up." Katniss said, without any particular emotion.
"Someone else came back to District 12 today." Greasy Sae said knowingly.
"Yea? Who?"
"The person that you miss most."
"Wha-… how?" Katniss said as she dropped her utensils.
"I guess you meant too much to him, go now." Graesy Sae smiled broadly as Katniss left without another word. She ran as fast as she can to the bakery where she saw a young man with a small bag on his shoulders. He turned around and as soon as he saw Katniss, the worry creases disappeared.
"Peeta." Katniss said as she ran into his open arms. She breathed in his familiar scent and hugged him as tight as she can. It was… something she had missed dearly, his protective arms around her that was the one thing she missed from The Hunger Games: his presence. It could've been milleniums when they finally let go of each other, but it was what both of them needed. He ushered her into the bakery and started up the teapot.
"So how are you doing?" Peeta said as he sat down.
"Coping to say the most, how about you? I'm so sorry about your parents." Katniss said, mustering a brave smile.
"I'm alright. So how are you and Gale coming along?" Peeta asked, afraid of the answer. The mention of Gale panged at Katniss's heart, but smiled a little. For once, she was free to love Peeta without having to feel guilty that she was hurting Gale, but now she wasn't sure Peeta felt the same way.
"Gale… he left Peeta… I couldn't… he couldn't be here with me anymore." Katniss said as Peeta lit up a little.
"I'm here now okay Katniss? I was here for you before, I'm here for you now and I'll always be here for you." Peeta said, looking Katniss right in the eyes. She saw no doubt in those beautiful eyes of his, so she gently took his hand in hers.
"I thought you weren't gonna come back… I don't know what I would've done." Katniss said uncertainly as a warm smile graced his lips.
"I was always gonna come back Katniss. When I said loved you, I meant it."
"I'm glad you're back." Katniss said as she got just a tiny bit uncomfortable. She could feel another talk about her feelings, and she wasn't sure if she could get the right words out.
"Katniss… after all this… where does this leave us?" Peeta said as he took a big breath. Katniss opened her mouth to say something, but closed it in fear of saying something wrong. She breathed in for the last time and crashed her lips into Peeta's, she sensed his surprise but he quickly responded. He took her in his arms and pulled her closer, with Katniss locking her arms around his neck. When they finally came up for air, Peeta laughed and spun Katniss around.
"I want you Peeta, only you." Katniss said sincerely, realising only now why she was compelled to come back to District 12.
And that, was their first real moment as a real couple.
