I'll Be Waiting

I've waited so long for your return
They say your dead,
but I want you to come back
and save me.

I wait here in the dark
Hoping you'll come
and let me smell the faint scent
of smoke on your clothes.

I kneel here in the doorway
hoping you'll come home
and argue with me
until you give up and fall asleep.

I sit here on the steps
hoping you'll pull in
looking proud
or feeling low.

I lay here on the couch
trying to imagine your voice
yelling at me
or the sound of the air as you train.

You may come home again
or you may not
But I'll be waiting here
Even if you don't.
