A/N: I've had kind of a tough time writing lately. This is the first thing I've written in almost three weeks. Originally posted at lita_fics, as a response to the prompt "misunderstood/misunderstanding". Takes place back in 2003, around the time of the infamous "bet" storyline (one of my personal faves). Please R&R!
"I can't believe you!" Lita screamed, throwing her hands up in the air in an act of exasperation.
"What are you talking about?"
"Oh come on, I'm not stupid…I heard you talking to Chris earlier. The flowers, the candy, the late night phone calls—all of it was just a ploy to get in my pants!" She shook her head. "You're both pathetic."
"Please, Li, hear me out—this whole thing is just one huge misunderstanding; you don't know the whole story," Christian pleaded, trying to cover his tracks. He hadn't anticipated this happening, and now he was in a position that he knew would end badly.
"Oh really?" Lita fired back, crossing her arms over her chest. "Then enlighten me as to what 'the whole story' really is."
Christian bit his lip, unsure of what to say. How was he going to worm his way out of this one? Trish had caught on to what was happening even before Lita told her, but once she spoke to Chris, he'd been able to charm the blonde and play to her ego, and so Trish was now convinced that Chris really had harbored feelings for her the entire time. But Lita wasn't Trish, and Christian knew that no matter how much he tried to pour on the charm, the redhead wasn't going to believe him. He still wasn't ready to come clean, however. All he needed was the perfect lie. Despite what he'd done—and Jay knew that it was cowardly—if the redhead walked away from him, that meant he'd lose the bet, and Jay wasn't about to let that happen. He knew that Chris would never let it go if he won.
"I knew it!" Lita exclaimed when Christian didn't say anything. "I knew that you were lying to me all along. Why would you do that, Jay?"
Stepping forward a bit, Jay locked eyes with the Diva and bit his lip, his voice shaky as he spoke.
"It's not what you think," the blonde stammered. "It was never my intention to hurt you." It was a bold faced lie and Lita knew it, but surprisingly, the woman didn't call Jay out on it. She just stood there, silent as she processed what the blonde was telling her.
Her jaw tightening, the former Women's Champion replied, quiet sharply,
"Maybe not, but you did. Thanks a lot, do you know how much I cared about you?"
Sighing, she shook her head as she turned to leave.
"You're unbelievable, you know that?" she spat. "I thought we had something good, Jay. But I guess you were willing to throw that away for a stupid Canadian dollar."
Jay simply stared back at Lita, frozen in his spot, with a dumbfounded expression on his face.
"Oh, and when you see Chris, tell him I'm not talking to him either," the redhead stated. "He's just as much to blame for this as you are. I'm going out tonight with Trish, and I'm telling her the truth about this entire thing."
And as his former lover stormed out of the room, Jay silently cursed himself for letting what could possibly have been his saving grace walk away. Why hadn't he tried to stop her? It wasn't like he could just go apologize and expect everything to be okay again.
He had allowed a stupid bet to cloud his judgment, and now the relationship was unsalvageable. But it was something he was going to have to deal with. He'd made his bed; now he had to lie in it, whether he liked it or not.
The old saying "what goes around, comes around" could never have been more true for Jay, especially when it came to this situation. He was now getting a taste of how Lita felt.
Hope you guys enjoyed!
