*Author's Notes: TISSUE ALERT!! This is one of those fics that jumped out and caught the heel of my black high heeled boots and just wouldn't let go until it was written. Now given recent inquiries, I found myself wondering whether Gil and Cath actually had an affair while she was married or not. I decided to leave it ambiguous in this fic, so believe what you will. So here it is.

I want to be a good woman

and I want you to be a good man

this is I will be leaving

this is why I can't see you no more

I will miss your heart so tender

and I will love this love forever

She stared at herself in the mirror, hardly recognizing the person she saw. Her wild blond hair had been trimmed into a neat shoulder length style, and the glittering costumes of the strip clubs had been traded in for a pale blue sweater and jeans.

She let her eyes travel to the bassinet on the other side of the room. At times, it was still so hard to believe that someone like her could be worthy of so wonderful a gift as the sleeping baby she'd been holding in her arms only moments ago.

Feeling tears slipping down her cheeks, she remembered the promise she had made some time ago, that she would sacrifice anything to give her daughter a good life.

I don't want to be a bad woman

and I can't stand to see you be a bad man

I will miss your heart so tender

And I will love this love forever

this is why I am leaving

this is why I can't see you no more

"Catherine, what are you doing here so late?" Grissom asked, surprised but not at all displeased to see her.

"We need to talk," she whispered softly, feeling the tears beginning to form once more in her eyes.

"Is something wrong?" he asked, leading her into the house. "Is Lindsey okay?"

"She's fine," Catherine said all at once beginning to cry. "She's at home with her daddy. You know Eddie loves to hold her and rock her to sleep?"

Not knowing what else to do, Grissom nodded.

"It's like after all these years, he's finally.." Catherine trailed off for a moment and stared into Grissom's blue eyes. "It's like we're a family."

"That's wonderful Cath," Grissom said, feeling his heart shatter into a million pieces. "I'm happy for you."

"No you aren't," she whispered. It was a strange statement, neither bitter nor sarcastic. It was just the sad truth. She went on quickly, "Gil, I don't want you to have this burden. You don't deserve it. It's not fair."

"Catherine I don't-" he began, confused as to what she was getting at.

"You're too good to be the other man," Catherine whispered, reaching out and gently touching his cheek. "And you're too good for me."

Before he could fully take in her words, Grissom felt Catherine's lips touch his in a soft kiss. He closed his eyes savoring the moment, and when he opened them, she was already moving towards the door.

Part of him wanted to run after her, to pull her into his arms and tell her that somehow their love could survive without ruining her family. But he let her go.

and this is why I am lying

when I say that I don't love you no more

THE END
