This was for elle_blessing.

Narcissa stared out of the window trying to hold back the tears that were about to fall.

She had thought that she would be happy with Lucius. He was always so attentive and gentle with her when they had been courting; she should have known that it was a lie.

He wasn't violent towards her – their marriage vows prevented that- but once the wedding night was over he showed Narcissa his true self; a cold, callous, and uncaring bastard. He only came to her bed once a month when she was most likely to conceive. It seemed to Narcissa that Lucius had only seen her as a brood mare to give him his heir and any spares that she could.

She thought back to the days when she was free, and when she had the chance to make her own choices.

It was this which finally made her tears fall.

Narcissa remembered every detail as if it had happened yesterday.

"Marry me, Narcissa. I love you and I will make you the happiest woman alive," Rabastan murmured as he pulled her close.

"My father's forbidden it, Rab. I can't go against him. You saw what happened to…to her," Narcissa replied sounding strangled.

She wanted to say yes. She wanted to run away with him, but she couldn't. Her father knew best, and he wanted her to marry Lucius. She would be happy with him and would want for nothing.

Rabastan pulled back and looked into her eyes.

"If you're sure that is what you want then I will leave, but it stops here. I won't come back for you," he warned.

"I love you too, but I can't defy my family," Narcissa replied as she tried to control her emotions.

Rabastan sighed.

"I hope you find the happiness you deserve, Narcissa," he said before he walked away and left her to cry.

Narcissa had regretted every day not marrying Rabastan and going against her father. She knew that he would have done exactly what he said and more, but now it was too late and she had to live with the choice she had made.
