Halloween Remembrance

"But Daddy, I wanna go trick-or-treating!"

Harry looked down at his 4 year old son. James Sirius Potter. He was named after the two greatest father figures in his life. And it was in their memory that Harry had refused to take their namesake trick-or-treating.

Oct 31. For most, it was a day of fun, a day to be with friends and play pranks, a day to dress up and get drunk on sugar. But not for Harry. Life was cruel to him that way- it never let him forget the horrors he had faced, the deaths he had seen. And today was the worst.

Because today was the day his parents died.

Gazing down at his son, he realized how much he meant to him. James was so mischievous, so loving… he was the whole world to Harry.

No wait, he couldn't say that. Ginny would kill him. James was a good portion of his world- Ginny was the rest.

"James-"

He stopped. No, he decided. James deserved to have fun.

"Alright."

"Really!" James squealed.

"Yes. Now what costume do you want?"

He watched in amusement as James tried to decide. Every few minutes, he would change his mind. First he was a robot, then superman, then a dementor, then a ghost… Eventually, Harry got so fed up he threatened to take away his candy privileges for the night. That sobered James up, and he finally decided on one. Harry had to admit it was a good pick.

He took James around the block, laughing at his son's antics. As he heard him respond, yet again, to the curious questions of what he was, Harry realized this was how his parents would have wanted him to be- Happy, and honoring them through his enjoyment of the life they had given him through their sacrifices.

Besides, it was difficult to stay sad when his son said such entertaining things.

"Oh, and what are you?" the old lady asked, puzzled by the odd costume. Harry grinned as he heard his son's voice.

"I'm Mummy when she's mad!"

Hopefully, Ginny would never find out.
