Jack remembers Valerie after the Ninth Doctor book "The Deviant Strain."

Jack watched the TARDIS's door close and the link to Valerie's world faded. He remembered The Doctor's words: Jack saved Valerie from being jellified. Was she really saved? Was this a life?

He told Sergeyev that he was afraid of becoming like Valerie. Any soldier would be. He prayed to whatever powers that be that he would die in battle. That was an honorable death.

He remembered her embrace. Her father said he showed him his responsibility again. Jack saved Valerie's life, and Valerie showed him it took more courage to face her situation than the timeless humans.
