Author's note:Ok, as usual, I don't own anything. The characters belong to J. K. Rowling, and the song is by Nick Cave. Now that we got that out of way, I just wanted to say that this is my all-time favorite love song and my favorite pairing at the moment. It was a quick write so don't expect much of it. Still, I hope you like it!
Into My Arms
I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
Severus Snape was not a religious man. But, considering the story of his life, it's not hard to understand why his faith in God faded. Not only his faith in God, but his faith in Good too. He was so tired of serving others that the idea of a God scared him, scared him so damn much. The only 'Good' he believed in was her. She was beautiful, and loved him for reasons he may never understand. She believed in God and in 'Good'. He knew this from the stories she told him on those rainy nights that they spent together. Those were, undoubtedly, the best moments of his life.
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms
He loved her for everything she was and even more for what she wasn't. Her bushy hair, her big teeth, her interest in learning… everything. She was perfect to him, with all her so-called imperfections and her outdated virtues. If God was actually real, then he prayed that God wouldn't change a single thing about her. And that someday, she'll be his, and only his. Not as just a friend, but as much, much more.
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms
To have her in his arms was a dream. A dream he hoped and prayed would someday come true.
And I don't believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that's true
Angel. That was his pet name for her. Why? Because that's exactly what she was. She was his angel. A friend he never thought he'd have.
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms
When the war had begun, he had been so worried about her. Sure, she is the smartest witch he had ever met, but he knew all too well how capable The Dark Lord was. Being one of his followers, (even if he was just a spy and double-agent) he saw the way his "Master" treated her "Kind". The idea of him, or anyone, doing those things to his love was, well, unbearable. He wanted to protect her, but at the time it was impossible. So he wished that someone cleared her path. At least until he can do that himself.
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms
After the war, they became friends. Even that was better than just being her teacher, but it was not nearly enough. He wanted - or rather he needed to have her in his arms; to hold her at night. Every night.
And I believe in Love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candle burning
And make her journey bright and pure
That she will keep returning
Always and evermore
Yes. He still believed in love. And so did she.
One day they would be together. This much he knew. One day, they'd pledge their love and themselves to one another, for always and evermore.
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms
Until that day, he'd wait for her, because she was worth it. Hermione was worth all the waiting in the world.
