My black eyes narrowed, twitching my whiskers dangerously as I stalked silently along the hard-wooded floor, slowly keeping to the shadows. Gently, I peered around the corner of the hall at my prey. A growl rumbled in my throat, swishing my tail against the ground as I peered at its small, breathing shape. My black striped, orange fur gleamed as I crouched down, giving my ruffled, white chest fur a couple of rapid licks, before lifting my rump, and giving a loud caterwaul. Leaping out from my hiding place, paws extended out at it. It gave a cry as my heavy paws bowled it over, pinning it down to the ground. "Silly tiger! Hobbes!" Calvin gave a great wail and struggled against my grasp. I grinned down at him, moving over and sitting on his chest. Purring brightly now. My tail curled around my paws as I rested my full weight on his tiny, bony chest. "I win." I chuckled, and Calvin scowled at me, swishing his hand at my face. "Get off you great lump. Mom won't be happy." I twitched an ear, noticing his torn clothes, and getting off him with exaggerated slowness. Stretching and parting my jaws in a loud yawn, claws making soft clinks on the floor, sitting just next to him as he sat up. Smoothing back his blond hair. He frowned at me, making me laugh inwardly. He took everything so seriously! He shoved my shoulder roughly, but it was like trying to push a wall with a toothpick. I didn't budge, which made him scowl harder. I curled up on my side in the sunlight to rest, and as I heard Calvin get up to get on other clothes, I listened to his mom enter and nag about him not being ready yet. Adults. I stiffened, and I grew still. Unmoving, not breathing. Calvin's faith in my being alive was what kept me living. But his mom knew nothing.. I couldn't move with people who didn't believe in me. My glassy black eyes stared sightlessly at the wall as I waited. Waited for her to leave. For Calvin to return from school.. for me to breathe again.
