AN: I just watched the final episode of DN and this idea popped into my head. My first fic for this anime. I hope you like it. Very very minor Light/L if you turn your head and screw up your eyes.

Disclaimer: It would be so different if I owned it…trust me.

He was dying.

It was so simple a concept to grasp.

He was dying, and this time there would be no turning back.

There were no more last minute schemes he could use to save his neck. No more brilliant ideas to stop him from falling in the nick of time. No other options than to just…die.

And for once, the simplicity of it all was beautiful.

There was pain…everywhere, but it was more like an irritating white noise in the back of his brain. Mostly he just felt…peaceful…almost resigned. He'd never realized how easy giving up could be.

Losing…it felt more like finally letting go. Finally giving up those reigns he clutched so tightly for so long and letting the horses roam where they may. His sculpted hands so often clenched into fists were now useless and bloody and oh so tired. His mind, constantly twisting and conniving, was like a much used sponge, wrung dry of all its promise.

And it felt so nice to just…stop.

There was nothing else here but the rustle of the wind and blood seeping from his own body. Nothing else to puzzle over. Nothing else to solve. Nothing else but the darkness lingering on the edges of his vision.

And it was so nice.

He felt his eyelids drooping closed, and he didn't fight them. For once, he didn't fight anything.

He didn't even start when he noticed the figure standing before him. The slouched, sloppy person that peered down at him with eyes like rich pools of ebony and skin like fallen snow. And he knew it was impossible for him to be there, but the logical part of his brain had long since ceased functioning.

L was beautiful.

He wondered what, in those last moments, what he was seeing in the detective's face. There was no malice there, no hint of triumph to curve those colorless lips. L just stood there, staring at him.

And he stared back with something like real emotion shining in his clouded eyes.

He felt his lips part slightly, as if there was something he wanted to say. The words died on his tongue as L smiled at him.

And it wasn't the gleeful smirk of the victor over him opponent. It wasn't angry or sad or even happy.

It was just a smile. L's smile. And it was everything.

And, as Light Yagami slipped at last from this world, he felt himself smile slightly back.

A/N: I liked the concept…the execution however…Review?
