He looks around at all the people. When his eyes linger on some they just make him sick to his stomach. He can't understand how they could celebrate this beautiful day. They didn't understand it, yet they chatted away, ate, drank and were merry. They had not a care in the world.
No, he thinks to himself bitterly, they didn't care. They were the monsters young children had nightmares about; what he had nightmares about, what they destined him to be.
He scoffs at the idea. He doesn't join the merriment. He knows where they're is merriment to be had, but leaving would be a problem- if anyone cared. And they didn't. They paid him no mind. No one greeted him when he walked through the door. It was as if he was the young child again and everyone was skirting the conversation so he didn't know what was going on.
But he always knows what is going on. Always knew. He knows not to interject his opinion and do what his father told him.
He knows he spent enough time there to make his mother happy. Through the crowd she gives him a small nod and he gets up and approaches him. Beautiful as always he likes that his mother has a taste of her own. Her features stayed the same; the ones that sometimes held a little sadness always brightening when she saw him.
When she gets close enough to him he can smell her perfume. She kisses his cheek and walks away engaging in a conversation that she probably has no interest in. He knows she does everything for her husband, his father. He loves her as much as she loves him. His judgment was just cloudier than a crystal ball.
He leaves the party and changes into warm clothing. He grabs his bag. It's heavier than he thought it'd be. But he carries it and leaves through an exit as far away from the party as he could get.
The air is extremely cold. The snow crunches under his boots. He knows where he needs to go and heads in that direction. It takes him about ten minutes before he hears familiar chatter and laughter.
Someone approaches him. He knows who it is because she takes a run at him and jumps into his arms. Balancing her and the sack is hard but he manages.
"You're the last one to arrive," she says getting down.
"Looks like the party has started without me," he says. He smells the sweetness on her breath.
She takes his hand and they continue on. "At least we saved you some."
They walk on to where all their closest friends sit around a roaring fire. The next generation and they wanted to have a choice, not what someone else has picked for them.
