Most people get cards for Christmas. I get a new roommate. Hi, my name's Mello. I'm seven years old and live at an orphanage called Wammy's House. My new roommate's pretty cool. But, maybe I should go back to this morning and tell it from the beginning.

I was sitting in my room, reading a book. I'd been outside for most of the morning, running around in the snow. It was only two days until Christmas and all the kids were acting like they'd had twenty shots of pure caffeine. I needed a break from it. Some peace and quiet. But, of course, it was interrupted when Roger opened my door. "Good morning, Mello. I have someone I'd like you to meet.", he said in a bored tone. I rolled my eyes. Roger looked back towards the door. "In here. Come on, he's not going to hurt you.", he said with a meaningful glance in my direction. In case you can't tell, Roger and I have never really been on good terms. I looked towards the door as well.

A boy about a year younger than me was standing in the doorway. He had messy red hair and a black and white striped shirt that was a little baggy on his skinny frame. I couldn't tell what color eyes he had because he wore these strange orange lens goggles. His jeans had rips in the knees and his Converse were faded. His jacket was too big for him too. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this was a new orphan. He wouldn't look at me or Roger, preferring instead to look at the floor. Roger sighed.

"Mello, this is Matt. He's you're new roommate. Be nice to him.", he said then left. I looked at the new kid. "Hey, I'm Mello.", I said, trying to be nice to him. He looked like he'd had a rough day. He didn't respond. What's wrong with this kid? Can't he talk?, I thought. "Uh, well, that's your bed over there.", I tried again. He walked over and sat down on the bed, fiddling with the goggle's strap. "So, your name's Matt, right?" He simply nodded.

"You ever take those things off?", I said, indicating the goggles. He shook his head. By this time, I was seriously beginning to doubt his ability to speak. "Can you talk?", I asked. I got a mumbled reply. Well, it was progress. "What?" "Yes, I can talk.", he said quietly, though he still wouldn't look me in the eye. "Well, Matt, what do ya like to do?", I asked, trying to break the awkward feeling in the room. "Video games, computers. Stuff like that.", he said, a little more confidently. I smiled. "Cool."

We continued talking for a while. I found out that he knew a lot about computers from his parents, but he didn't talk about them much. After a few hours of talking, he looked pretty tired. He slipped the goggles off so that they hung around his neck and rubbed his eyes. When he opened them again, I saw he had green eyes. But, not your average green eyes. His had many different shades of green, merging together. They were kinda cool. I usually didn't like having a roommate. The others were transferred out of my room soon after arriving, due to my constant "attitude problems". But, this one was different. Maybe I'll let him hang around for a bit. But, just for a little while.
