Only a select few were allowed to be in the tournaments, most characters knew that.

Of course, there were the characters that, no matter what, would be competing in the tournaments, without needing to to go to tryouts. To name them, there were Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Kirby, Captain Falcon, Fox, Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, Samus, Donkey Kong, Ness, and Link- the original characters from when the annual tournaments first begun.

Each year, the tournaments grew more popular, and therefor allowed more characters to join. And the amount of characters that could compete in this year's tournaments was fifty-five. Fifty-five characters. Fourteen more characters than were allowed last year.

Pit took a deep breath; he was allowed in the previous two tournaments, both respectively known as Brawl and Project M, but he was still uncertain if he was going to pass the tryouts. Usually, once a character passes tryouts the first time, it's a breeze to pass the tryouts afterwards. But things can always screw up, and that's why Pichu didn't pass after their glory in the tournament known as Melee.

Pit loved the fact that he was allowed to go to tryouts- the tournaments were a place where people from all sorts of different worlds met up, and it was only then that he was ever able to directly speak to them. As an angel, he just wasn't allowed to leave Skyworld any other time, unless it was for an important mission requested by Lady Palutena. Which reminded him- Lady Palutena wanted to enter the tournaments as well, didn't she?

Pit looked towards the "stage", as people call it. It was more like a magical battlefield- at least that's how Pit thought of it. He was heading towards the area where the audience often cheers when tournaments are active. When he signed up for them- with the help of Lady Palutena, of course- he was told to wait there until he was called for the tryout. Pit took a seat, and tried to figure out the characters that were fighting on top the stage. He recognized one a Pikachu, and the other one as.. Wolf, a character who had joined the tournaments successfully last year.

Pit watched how Pikachu moved, and his strategy against Wolf. Wolf's percentage was high... and seemingly barely landed a hit on Pikachu, as Pikachu had a low percentage. This surprised Pit since Wolf did so well previously, but he was surprised even more when he saw Wolf get flung off stage by Pikachu. Pit couldn't shake off how quickly Wolf was defeated, and felt extremely nervous. Pit then hoped not to get paired with Pikachu; not for this tryout at least. As long as he wasn't paired up with Pikachu, he could possibly win! ...Or at least he thinks so. He was forgetting about the one character he knew the last two tournaments and didn't particularly like..

The angel's wings moved due to his growing nervous, twitching outward before closing in a little. Pit wasn't fully paying attention, and jumped a little when he saw Pikachu brush past him. He then heard the announcer speak, "May Pit from Skyworld walk onto stage." Realizing that Pikachu was sitting among the other characters and not getting ready to play onstage, Pit had a burst of confidence at he made his way to the stage entrance...
