"I wonder what it would be like", Caroline pondered out loud, as she stared thoughtfully over the table, eyes focused on Klaus. He'd taken her to an expensive and formal restaurant for their first date. As such, the young vampiress had dressed appropriately for the occasion. On her figure, was a stunning black gown, given to her by her mother. Her hair was done up in a loose bun, some of her blond strands purposefully set to encircle her head in a way which looked graceful yet effortless. And on her ears, were the diamond earrings Klaus had bought specifically for this occasion. Overall, Caroline was positively glowing. Something her date did not fail to notice.
Now, Klaus had heard Caroline speak, and he knew from countless conversations with women that when they said something cryptic like that you had to participate in the conversation. Statements like that were specifically made to garner such a result.
"What would what would be like, Caroline?" There he'd said it. Now, it was her turn. She gazed at him with her endearingly thoughtful and- he hoped- slightly amorous brown eyes.
"Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to fall in love with you" She finished, before shifting her gaze to her napkin, suddenly abashed.
"Well, I should certainly hope you would wonder such a thing. I admit, I have often wondered the same about you. And if I may be completely honest…"he waited until he was certain he had her full attention, "I believe loving me would be full of trials. For one, I subsist on humans. I'm not a tame vampire, Caroline."
Half playing with the idea, rather than believing it, Caroline asked, "Would you change that for me? Would you stop killing people if it meant being with me?"
"I don't believe a relationship where either of us is forced to change for the other would be healthy or beneficial in the long run. Let us say I stopped killing humans for you. That might work for a while, but given time, I'd probably grow to resent you. Who are you to exert so much control over me? Likewise, if I were to force you to kill humans, doubtless you would come to hate me. We should love each other as we are, not for who we wish the other to be. Or at least, that's what I believe." The waiter served the wine as Caroline prepared her answer. Klaus was pleased to find it was delicious. And a good thing, too. He rather liked the human who had recommended this place. Killing him for bad wine would have been a shame.
"So what about compromise?" Caroline finally said, after taking a sip.
"Of what sort?" Ah, she hadn't thought quite that far ahead. Klaus smiled as he wondered what sort of compromise she'd come up with.
"Let's say you want someone dead" she started haltingly, "and I want them alive."
"Yes, that is quite the dilemma."
"So, we compromise. You kill him, and then I turn him into a zombie!"
"And how would you accomplish that?" Klaus inquired.
"Well, I would bite him and then…"
"Feed him radioactive blood?" he guessed. An amused giggle bubbled out of Caroline.
"Or I could just make him a vampire, right?" She finished, stifling her next fit of giggles behind her hand.
How in the world could this person sitting in front of him be a vampire? She was so alive, even her cheeks seemed flushed from the wine and her mild embarrassment. He could count on one hand, minus four fingers, all the vampires he'd met over the centuries he could justifiably and honestly call adorable. Really, she was just… incredible.
She must have seen something in his face, because she abruptly brought up the subject of how long their orders were taking.
"If waiting for the meal bothers you, we could just eat the waiter," he suggested playfully, and was rewarded with a reproachful pout. "What? I'm just saying… it's a thought, you know?"
