Hey everyone. This story was brought to you by the Ongoing - Gift Tag on Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I wrote for Anna's prompt of James Potter/Dorcas Meadows friendship. Warning for a bit of bullying and whole lot of fluff. I hope you all enjoy The Beginning of a Friendship.
The first time James Potter meets Dorcas Meadows they are both in first year. He doesn't think much of her upon first glance. She's a bit smaller than the rest of the girls. Her blonde hair is straight and the only time anyone saw her blue eyes was when everyone was in class. Anyone can tell she's homesick which makes her an easy target for bullies.
"What's wrong Dorky?" a much taller fifth year sneers down at her.
The young girl doesn't answer but just looking at her James Potter can tell the younger girl is crying. Just to confirm what James thought Dorcas runs the sleeve of her robe over her eyes.
"Look everyone," the older girl called out, "Dorky's crying."
Everyone in the common room burst out laughing. Everyone except for the a few Dorcas's fellow first years which, of course, included James Potter. This just made him angry. Storming forward he stood toe to toe with the older girl.
"It's not her fault she's homesick," James told her voice raising as he looked into the dark haired girl's eyes. "I bet you felt much the same way when you were a first year." He turned to the rest of the room anger still coloring his voice. "You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Especially because a first year is pointing out how wrong you are." He turned to Dorcas. "Let's get out of here for a little. I'll show you a place that helped me though my own homesickness."
Dorcas didn't know how to respond. So she decided that she'd follow the boy who stood up for her. What's the worst that could happen? She'd already been made fun in front of almost the whole common room. Her eyes widened in surprise as she followed James Potter out the most lovely view she'd ever seen.
"What is this?" she asked in awe.
"It's my special place by the Black Lake," James told her. "Only my friends know about."
Does that make me one of his friends, Dorcas thought as she sat next to the dark haired dark eyed boy. She really hoped that was the case. So far she'd only made friends with the first year girls in her dormitory. She didn't really have that many friends.
"Does that make me one of your friends too?" she asked trying to keep the hope out of her voice.
James Potter smiled over at the shy blonde girl sitting by his side. "Of course it does," he told her. "Your definitely one of my friends. I wouldn't have it any other way." He put his arm around Dorcas's shoulder. "Do you want to talk about what was bothering you earlier?"
They'd spent the rest of that day talking about her homesickness. Then they continued on to the topics of their friends and families. They talked until it was dark outside and they had to head into dinner.
I hope you all enjoyed The Beginning of a Friendship.
