Misty knew there were some things she would just never hear Ash say.

He was an overly determined, self-motivating, confident little twerp with an attitude problem. He had a wise-crack for every occasion, an annoyingly kind personality, and a gullibility that softened her heart even as she teased him for it. For years she trailed faithfully behind him, taunting and prodding and encouraging him secretly behind the scenes, content to fall into the background.

But those days were over.

Ash had left her in her hometown what seemed like forever ago, with naught but a couple of tears, his old hat, and a few scattered memories. At first she had been burdened by the responsibilities, tied down to the place by her sisters' plea. But now… Now she didn't have any reason to remain. She found herself inventing excuses left and right, desperately avoiding the issue.

Perhaps she was too afraid to leave; too scared to escape into a world not only without any sisters - any security - but also no Ash to be led by. Maybe she was frightened by this concept of complete solitude, no one to hold her hand or point her in the right direction. Maybe she was afraid to forge her own path, the one that had been brushed aside to make room for everyone else's.

Maybe it was time to follow her own dreams.

So Misty left on a cold January morning, leaving a note for her sisters that guaranteed her eventual return. She had no manner of direction; no map, no bike, no guide, no rules.

But maybe if she took life as calmly as he did, with his optimism and perseverance and indomitability, she could inherit his utter faith - in all matters of life.

Maybe she could look to the sky as she had seen him do so often, smiling face confronting the blaring sun, ignoring the naysayers who told him to give it up; to forfeit.

It was the only time she had ever heard him say, 'I can't.'
