Chapter One

Numb

You're sick of feeling numb
You're not the only one
I'll take you by the hand
And I'll show you a world that you can understand

This life is filled with hurt
When happiness doesn't work
Trust me and take my hand
When the lights go out you will understand

Pain, without love
Pain, I can't get enough
Pain, I like it rough
'Cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all

Pain, without love
Pain, I can't get enough
Pain, I like it rough
'Cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all

Anger and agony
Are better than misery
Trust me, I've got a plan
When the lights go off, you will understand

I switched gears as I came to a halt in front of the police station. I was terrified of what was happening. I had been called to identify the body of my sister. My brothers were driving up from the south to help. I was hoping when I wasn't first here. It was all I could pray for that they were here first. I closed my eyes as I climbed off my Ducati. I could see some of the cops looking at me and I removed my helmet. I felt my face become a frown. I could hear them commenting about a girl on a bike.

I hated that shit.

I looked up the steps seeing my brothers run down to me.

"James!" I ran up and he hugged me tightly. "Hayden!" We all hugged for a minute. I looked up at them. "Have you gone in yet?"

"We can't," Hayden began with a sigh shaking his head. "We just saw her a few weeks ago. I don't want to go up and see that it's her."

"You think I want to?" I questioned him some tears forming in my eyes.

James held me close and I rested my head on his chest. I was so much shorter than them. It ticked me of sometimes. I felt like I was looking up to everyone. "We need to go in though. If we stay outside then we'll never know if it's her or not."

I nodded, both of them put their arms around me and we walked into the main entrance. Hayden walked up to the front desk first, I stayed with James. Hayden was the one who acted the oldest out of all of us. Besides the obvious our older sister, but with James was the one I was closest too. He was my best friend and he and I had the most in common.

He also knew the most about me. I had plenty to hide; he knew most of it, so had she. We worked together back in New York sometimes but not since she graduated and came here. I still didn't really understand why she had. It was South Boston. If the mob wouldn't get you the drunks would. Stupid fucking Irishmen, a little over a year ago two nuts went around shooting and killing the mob.

Rumors were they still did it but not on such a large grand stage as the last ones. Taking out small guys to save face, waiting for the big guys to screw up.

I looked up to James briefly. His eyes were fixed on our brother. He wanted to get this done and over with as much as the rest as us. We watched as Hayden motioned for us to follow him and the officer.

The officer walked us over to a detective. His tag said Greenly.

"Ah," He began while we made our way over to him. "You're here to identify the body aren't you?"

"How do you know it's her?" I questioned with a choke in my voice.

"We found her drivers license on her," He told him with a sigh. He talked while we followed him to the morgue. "I must admit the state of the body is not exactly for everyone."

He looked directly at me. We stood outside the door. I looked to James and Hayden. They knew the situation I had been left to, so they didn't say anything. Well I take that back, James knew, Hayden didn't. He didn't want too.

We looked back to the detective. "I warned you. Right this way."

I walked in first, followed closely by my brothers. Greenly brought us over to the table and removed the blanket. I covered my mouth turning into Hayden. He nodded and I pushed past him. And I pushed past him and James to get to the door. I shook my head as I vomited in the trashcan in the hallway. I heard Greenly talking to James as Hayden came out to me.

"Who the fuck did that?" I growled hunched over the trashcan.

He shrugged. "They don't know. Come on, I need a drink and so does James. We're going to head to the bar that she worked at. Mom and dad will be out here tomorrow to take the body back. Are you going back for the funeral?" I shook my head. He should have known better than to ask me if I was going back for the funeral. I'd say my goodbyes here. "Chloe, don't do this. You don't know anything.."

"Shove it Hayden!" I screamed at him. "Mom and dad kicked me out of the damn house when I was fourteen I don't give a shit what they want! I want to know what happened to her!"

"Don't!" He growled at me grabbing me so I had to look at him. "She's dead! You go looking for answers and you're dead too!"

"Mom and dad would love that," I growled at him.

"I should bitch smack you," He told me with a sneer. "Come on we're going to the bar. Get your fucking bike and you can follow us there."

He walked out in a huff and James walked out to me. He looked at me. "You going to say your goodbyes here?" I nodded still hunching over the trashcan. He looked over towards where Hayden had left to. "He doesn't know. You can't blame him for being so pissed off by the idea that you won't even face mom and dad for her funeral."

I looked up at him as I stood up straight. "Fuck that. He doesn't need to know."

"It'd make things easier on him if you told him," He reminded me with a sigh. I looked up at him with a look of disgust. He knew I didn't want him to know. It wasn't because I didn't think he could handle it but just because I didn't think our family could handle more shit than we already had.

"It would make it worse for everyone else though," I told him. He looked down at me and wrapped his arms around me. I walked back into the morgue. "Wouldn't it?"

He looked at the tiles; he knew I was right; I walked back into the room. Greenly stood next to the door. I half expected him to say something stupid about me throwing up but luckily he kept his mouth shut. I walked up to the table and looked down at her.

She was so pale. I couldn't believe it was her I was staring at on the table. I leaned down. My lips pressed to her forehead. My hands brushed her hair. It felt so strange. She was so cold. I glanced back to Greenly.

He looked so confused about what I was doing.

I walked over to him and stood closely to him. He seemed a little on edge about what I was doing. I smirked up at him under my dark auburn bangs. I didn't touch him. Lord only knew what they considered assaulting an officer here. I'd seen my friends try to get out of shit by flirty touching and ended up in jail for the week for assault.

"Do you know who did this?" I asked him softly, almost innocently.

"We have a few leads but nothing that we can pan out on," He told me with a giddy smile. "The FBI's jurisdiction now."

"She was killed by the mob?" I questioned playing with my shirts neckline.

"I'm really not suppose to say," He replied moving back against the wall. "I can only tell you where she lived and worked."

I smirked. It was better than nothing. "I'd love the addresses if you don't mind."

A:N: Short and sweet. Just setting up. Tell me what ya'll think. ^-^ Thanks for reading.
