PRETENDER
Toph dangled from his hand, and tears rushed to her eyes. I'm going to die, and I haven't told him anything.
She turned her head to the sky, knowing that she wouldn't see anything, but for a minute, she imagined she could. It's probably not how anyone else sees . . . but it's beautiful.
And she opened her mouth and said, "Sokka . . . I—"
Her throat constricted, and Suki flashed in front of her eyes. She was beautiful—much more beautiful than me, anyways—made-up and smiling. And Toph closed her eyes and bowed her head.
I'm not going to die living a lie. I'm not going to die pretending I've ever seen. I am who I am, and I won't change for him. I'm not going to die pretending . . . pretending . . .
Her hand slipped from his, slippery with sweat. But he held on with his fingers. His words, echoing in her ears. The tears began slipping down her face, and her mouth tasted of salt. Toph swallowed the lump in her throat.
. . . pretending he could ever love me.
And she fell, and she was happy.
