Happily Never After

The night was still and quiet. There was only one person who could pinpoint the single disturbance that night. A boy with raven black hair sat on top of a cobblestone aqueduct in the Roman camp. The camper was still as he looked out into the night sky.

A girl was asleep. Her head lying on a mountainous amount of paperwork. She awoke to the disturbance caused by the boy. She realised she had fallen asleep after she had sent the boy, her co-praetor, to bed. He was an insomniac like most of his kind, children of the Greek gods. He had left to go clear his mind.

The girl felt compelled to go check on her partner. She walked through the halls of the house they shared. She opened the door to his bedroom and found he was gone. A small breeze had picked up, and she felt a draft coming from the open window. She looked out the opened window. She spotted her co-praetor on top of the aqueduct.

"Percy!" she called out to him. He didn't respond. She called out to Percy again. This time he heard her and motioned for her to come to him.

The girl went down the stairs of her house. At the front door she grabbed her jacket to fend off the winter coldness. Even though the camp was in California, winter nights were still chilly. She carefully skipped from stepping stone to stepping stone until she reached the front yard's end. She gracefully walked across the street to the wooden ladder. She clung to the ladder and started climbing. A loose piece of wood splintered a finger on her left hand. She grabbed the side of the ladder above her head and rotated her thigh around the backside of the ladder to provide a stable place to stop. She used her mouth to rid of the splinter and spit it out before returning to climb the rest of the ladder.

She came to the top and heaved her body on to the top of the aqueduct. She wandered along the surface until she came to Percy. "What the hell are you doing out here?"

"I couldn't sleep," he said, avoiding her gaze.

"It's freezing cold out here!" the girl exclaimed.

"I'm from New York. To me this is just chilly."

They were silent for a moment. The girl sat down.

"So why can't you sleep?"

Percy responded, "I can't stop thinking about tomorrow."

"What's so difficult? You're going to see your girlfriend again! I don't see the problem."

"The problem is that I've fallen for you Reyna," Percy through out a shot in the dark. He turned his head, ready to be rejected.

Reyna was shocked. After taking a moment to recollect herself she kissed him. The kiss didn't last more than a moment but changed everything. The truth was they had been falling for eachother since Percy was made praetor, and the kiss only solidified their feelings.

"Reyna we can't make this work. I can't betray Annabeth."

"Yes we can. We can run away from all this. The prophecy, everything. We don't have to go. We'll have eachother," Reyna said.

"I couldn't do that. The fate of the world rests on my shoulders. I can't back down," Percy spoke.

Reyna ran, tears running down her face. She couldn't believe he would do that to her. She ran into her house and went to her room. She cried herself to sleep. How could he say he had fallen for her, then reject her?

...

Reyna awoke the next morning and got ready. She completely ignored Percy. When the Argo arrived she almost fell apart when she saw him kissing her.

When they were chased off by Roman forces she ran to her house and cried again. Percy remorsed for breaking her heart. The war ended one day. Percy married Annabeth and they lived happily ever after. While his loyalty resided with Annabeth, his heart always stayed with Reyna. Reynas heart was broken, and he was stuck with the person he didn't love. Sometimes he regretted not running away. He wanted to be with her, but he never couls never hurt Annabeth.

And they lived happily never after...

The End
