Wishful Thinking.
She had no knowledge of his liking towards her. She didn't even know that he was aware of her existence. It was because Sasuke knew how to hide his emotions well and hiding his attraction towards the naive Hyuga was of no trouble. All he had to do was ignore her, right? Wouldn't be that hard to accomplish since she wasn't part of his fan club, and he would only see her when his idiotic teammate, Naruto, would oh so casually bump into her near the ramen stand, and when that did happen, she would be too caught up in the idiot's tales as to spare a second glance at the village heartthrob standing right next to her.
But he didn't care. He may be of pride, but he certainly wasn't of stupidity as to deny the fact that she might actually like the loud blonde, and that his affection towards a girl who has spoken his name about 99.8 percent fewer times than any other female, hell, human in Konoha, was in fact, not returned.
Yeah. He definitely didn't care about whether or not she was interested in him. Not yet. It's not like he had any time for that sort of thing anyway. He had places to go, and people to kill. He had deaths to avenge, and dreams to fulfill. He couldn't just skip to step two before running the first one; which was to end the life of the infamous Itachi. He had everything planned out. He had everything set up, and to his luck, the long awaited day has finally arrived, as Sasuke heard of his ex-idol's intrusion in the nearby village. He had the strength and the confidence to finally be able to set free and put the bastard down. He left without a second to waste. No goodbye's needed, no good luck's necessary. The possibility of him dieing just didn't cross his mind as his clan's massacre nibbled at his skull.
He figured that he'll see everyone, well more importantly Hinata, in just a few months, maybe even a few weeks. He figured that he'd tell her of her beauty after he kills his brother. He figured that he'd tell her of his love after he ends his nightmares. He figured that she'll grow to like him, maybe even later on love him. He figured that she'll be the one to bear his children and restore his clan. He figured that they would live happily ever after, but he was wrong.
It was far too late for them. It was far too late for her. He had come back from his mission only to find her grave. He had come back from his mission, only to hear about her foreseen death. He had come back from his mission, only to face another ten years of solitude, of questioning, and of regret. If only he had known of her illness. If only he had stayed a little bit longer. If only he had told her of what he felt. If only she had known. If only.
Two simple words have been embedded into the stone, "Hyuga Hinata". The only two words that haunted his mind and the only two words that squeezed out his unexpected tears.
End.
