"I'm sorry Danny. I can't do this anymore."
She braved one last look into his eyes and could see his heart breaking. The beginning of tears could be seen in his eyes. She desperately wanted to take it all back. Throw herself into his arms again. It would be so easy. But nothing would change, their fighting and distance, their refusal to be open with eachother, to be honest was ruining their relationship, their friendship even.
No it was the right thing to do, to stop this now before either of them said something that couldn't be taken back. Before they went too far and couldn't even regain their friendship that had been always so natural. They were just too connected, too close to be able to stand the emotional distance that now separated them. It was as if this new relationship they had embarked on was too intimate.
They both knew they were right together but somehow each was determined to screw it up. It came from so many years of placing distance between themselves and others. To keep others from the dark memories that veiled everything good. Shutting out other people to save them. Especially now when they finally had the opportunity to be close to the only other person who could understand the hurt and pain the other had gone through. Only she could understand how he felt; only she had similar ghosts which haunted her. Haunting her happiness with guilt, haunting her sadness with misery.
She wondered how she would move on, or even worse how she would be able to watch him move on. That painful thought constricted her chest. She knew exactly how it would end. They would both find other people. Other people that wouldn't understand the darkness behind their eyes, the haunted look that shadowed their faces after particular cases. They needed people who would not push them for full disclosure, and would never push for such an intimacy of truth.
She wondered if anything would ever be the same between them. Was their relationship ruined after they had experienced the other through such passion or such sadness?
"I can't be without you Lindsay." His confession startled her out of her reverie. The heartbreak in his voice echoed in her head.
"And you never will be." She knew that her answer was purposefully ambiguous, but she just couldn't see her life without him. Yet they couldn't go on like this anymore, it would ruin them, their connection, their friendship. She had to be strong enough to repair it now. To let him go now. To let them go.
