Another folksongfic, not Steeleye this time however. This is based on Martin Carthy's version of 'Scarborough Fair', and as usual I claim no ownership over the tune or the general gist of the song. A lot of the words are mine though. It's two verses longer than the original, but all the words scan so the tune still fits.

I wrote this after reading the appendices in LotR, which always make me cry when I read about what happens to the Fellowship after the War of the Ring. I was reading about Legolas and Gimli sailing over Sea after Aragorn dies, and suddenly got very VERY annoyed at Legolas for leaving Middle-earth, coz I love him so. And as there's no way I can ever get to see him in Valinor, I got all depressed as well. This is the result of my heartache and tears.

Valinor - 'Scarborough Fair'

Are you going to Valinor?

Mithril, Gold, Athelas, Silver.

Remember me to one who lives there,

For he was a true love of mine.

Tell him to meet me where the sea swells,

Mithril, Gold, Athelas, Silver.

In Tirion fair Legolas dwells,

O he was a true love of mine.

Tell him to bring me a Silmaril,

Mithril, Gold, Athelas, Silver.

As a sign that he loves me still,

For he was a true love of mine.

Once we walked in Lorien,

Mithril, Gold, Athelas, Silver.

He promised that we would walk there again,

O he was a true love of mine.

I gave to him my true-love vows,

Mithril, Gold, Athelas, Silver.

We kissed under the gold-laden boughs,

O he was a true love of mine.

Legolas sailed across the Sea,

Mithril, Gold, Athelas, Silver.

And at the Havens he left me,

For he was a true love of mine.

How I thought my lover was true,

Mithril, Gold, Athelas, Silver.

I pray the same may not happen to you,

O he was a true love of mine.

Are you going to Valinor?

Mithril, Gold, Athelas, Silver.

Remember me to one who lives there,

For he was a true love of mine.

Notes on some of the words used, adapted from the index in 'The Silmarillion':

Valinor- the Undying Lands of the Valar that lie over the sea to the west of Middle-earth.

Tirion- city of the Elves in Valinor.

Silmaril- the three Silmarils were made by Feanor, greatest of Elven craftsmen, in the First Age of Middle-earth. Of the three only one remains, as one was lost in the sea and one fell into a chasm in the earth and was also lost. The last one is carried by Earendil, Elrond's father, in his boat that sails in the Heavens (it's a long story, if you want to hear it please read 'The Silmarillion'). Some of the light from this star is contained in the glass phial Galadriel gave to Frodo when he left Lothlorien. Anyway, getting hold of a Silmaril is an impossible task.

Lorien- an abbreviation of Lothlorien

Havens- there are several in Middle-earth, but this refers to the Havens at the mouth of the Anduin.
