"I know, but I promised Mom I'd look after her. She was one of a kind."

Christina hugged him. "It's alright, Jack. Your Mom will be glad you're okay, at least."

"I should have seen that bullet coming. I should have."

Tully took his matchstick out of his mouth. "Christina's right. Your mother will be doubly glad you're safe. You were awfully close to getting hit yourself."

Troy nodded, "We'll get you a new one."

Moffit looked up and glared at Troy. "How could you say such a thing? She's irreplaceable."

"I'm sorry, Moffit."
