(A/N: Well…here's my first non-HenNat Next to Normal fan fic. I hope you guys like it. Just out of curiosity, do we know Gabe's birthday? If we do, I can't think of it. Enjoy!)
Happy Birthday
Diana had celebrated every one of Gabe's birthdays.
At first, it was just circling the date in the calendar so she wouldn't forget.
Soon, she started making lists of presents she would have bought for him each year. Sometimes she would even go to the toy store and almost buy the things on the list before she remembered why she couldn't.
But even when she knew he wasn't there, she would always see a birthday card at the store, smile as she looked at it, and get it for her son. All of the cards she had bought over the years sat in his room, untouched except for when Diana looked at them.
She could always see Gabe smiling when she remembered his birthday—she knew he liked to be sure he wasn't forgotten.
On his 18th birthday, Gabe whispered to his mother, "Mom, I want a birthday cake."
Diana, of course, made one without question. Why shouldn't she bake a birthday cake for her son? She smiled as she mixed, baked, and brought the cake out to sing happy birthday to Gabe.
No one else in her family smiled when Gabe was remembered.
