"You think Sam is crazy?" Daniel asked. The look in those blue eyes unnerved Jack more than a little. The Colonel rocked back on his heels and quickly forced a grin.
"Not anymore than the rest of us," Jack offered, hoping the comedic response would distract Daniel from whatever thought was currently disturbing the archeologist. Daniel nodded and picked up a few of his notes absently.
"Is something troubling you Daniel Jackson?" Teal'c inquired. Daniel looked up as if he had no idea what the Jaffa was talking about.
"No," The linguist responded. He picked up a few more things. "I need to check some of these notes in my office." With that he hurried off into the hall.
"Daniel…this is your office…" Jack's voice trailed off as he realized the linguist was already gone.
Daniel walked quickly down the hallway hoping Jack took a hint for once and didn't follow him. He headed up to where Dr. MacKenzie was giving Sam her 'evaluation'. Daniel really hated that word. It brought back all kinds of bad memories, as did this whole situation.
Sam stepped out of the room looking rather frustrated. Daniel put on the most encouraging smile he could muster.
"How'd it go?" He asked softly. Sam turned to him and did a get job of trying to cover up her anger.
"Oh you know, MacKenzie is MacKenzie," She replied in an attempt at flippant. Daniel gave her that knowing look he was a master at, but said nothing.
"Want to get some coffee normally helps me…deal," He offered.
"Thanks Daniel, but I think I'll just go home and rest. Everyone keeps telling me that's all I need," She replied rolling her eyes. With that she turned and headed down the hallway.
"I believe you," Daniel stated suddenly, catching her in her tracks. Sam turned back to him gazing quizzically into his revealing blue eyes. "…and I understand. I know what it's like to have no one believe you even though you're right…"
And you know what it's like for everyone to think you're crazy. Sam added inwardly.
"Thanks Daniel," She answered walking back and wrapping the archeologist in a warm embrace. He smiled softly at her though it never fully reached his eyes.
"Maybe you should…"
"Don't you dare say take it easy."
"…ride your motorcycle…I heard that can be therapeutic," Daniel concluded unfazed by her interruption. Sam laughed.
"Maybe I will. Take care, Daniel."
Daniel watched her go, letting his mind drift back over past years. He had spent most of his life being misunderstood, and he was no stranger to having people think he was crazy. More often than not it was all because he was right and they refused to believe it. He said the pyramids were alien landing base…they thought he was crazy, but he was right. He traveled to an alternate dimension through a strange mirror device and returned with the knowledge that the world was in great peril, they thought he was crazy but he was right…and because of his persistence they saved the world.
Even after all this, they believed he was crazy when Machello's Gao'uld killing bugs attacked his mind. He knew he wasn't insane, but no one believe him. Even Jack eventually lost faith in him. But in the end Daniel had been right again.
Time after time people had stopped believing him…believing in him, and he wasn't about to let that happen to Sam.
