Chasing the Dragon

Your eyes are open, but you do not see
your mind has gone far away
For a moment I know that at last you are free
in my heart, I know you can't stay

I try to understand you, make sure you don't fall
a greater chore I never have known
and yet I won't leave you if another should call
the chief, or the queen from her throne

I know why you lie here, drowning yourself
I know what you seek, hope to find
I know what you've kept locked away on a shelf
Tucked into the back of your mind

How long will the dragon imprison you here?
How long will you be trapped in her claws?
And how long can you run from the visions you fear,
before they snap you up in their jaws?

So I watch you lie there, night after night,
watch the smoke slowly rise from your face
and my heart hurts to see such a pitiful sight
Locked within your own beauty and grace.
