MOMMY, MOMMY, MOMMY."
Beckett heard the frightened cries over the baby monitor and as soon as she walked into the brightly decorated bedroom, the tearful little boy ran right to her. He wrapped his arms around her as she picked him up.
"Calm down buddy," she soothed softly. "What's wrong?"
The little boy pointed to the window and sobbed, "Nightmare."
"What's outside that gave you a nightmare?" Beckett asked as she rubbed soothing circles on the frightened little boy's back.
"Baddies."
"Mummy won't let them hurt you, sweet boy," she reassured him.
Ty wrapped his chubby little arms around her neck and Beckett smiled as she kissed him on the temple.
"I'd never let anything hurt you Ty. I'll protect you from the all the baddies." And it was true. Kate Beckett would do anything to protect her family from the 'baddies', whether they be real or imagined.
The little boy finally relaxed into his mother's embrace. "I love you Mommy," he hiccoughed, his tears finally drying.
"I love you too my special little guy. You ready to go back to bed?"
"No," he whimpered and his arms once again tightened around his Mom's neck.
"Do you want to sleep with Mommy while Daddy's away?"
The little boy looked at her with still tear-brightened blue eyes, and whispered, "Yes."
Beckett smiled at the toddler as she carried him to her own bedroom and for the first time since he woke, his tiny face, so like his father's, broke into a tentative smile.
"I miss Daddy, Mommy."
"Me too, but he'll be back soon."
"Where's Daddy?"
"Book tour," she answered as she snuggled them both under the covers, explaining further when he looked quizzically at her. "He's talking to lots of people about his books."
"Like story time," the little boy said with a grin.
"Something like that," Beckett smiled as they cuddled close. They were both asleep in minutes.
