When I first met you, you reminded me so much of myself when I was that small. I wanted to protect you. I wanted to see you succeed. I wanted you to be everything that you could be. When I became your teacher, I knew I had my chance. I promised you that I would train you with all my life and I have. I taught you your rule and the forbidden lotus technique… that is why I cannot help but feel that your current situation is all my fault.

In your attempt to protect your dream, you have been crippled. You can barely walk. Ever since you saw Tsunade-sama that hint of despair in your eyes had magnified tenfold. Those eyes… those dark, deep eyes that I find so captivating, those brown pools in which I could become lost for days. I cannot stand to see you like this. That is why I made my promise… my promise to you that if you die, I will die with you.

Even though I show confidence and tell you that everything will be all right, I'm petrified. I'm afraid that you'll die never knowing… Yet I will not even be here during those critical hours…

"L-Lee… There is something that I must tell you…"

"What is it, Gai-sensei?" These are the first words you have spoken today. I can tell you are nervous and the reason is clear: today is your 50/50 surgery.

"Lee, I-…I have a mission…" And I won't even be by your side. I won't be here if-… when you wake up.

"W-What do you mean?"

"Lee, I'll be out of the village during your surgery." As the words leave my mouth, I sum up the courage to look at you and I can see it in your eyes; now you're not just nervous, you're terrified. You're practically shaking. "I'm sorry, Lee; I'll rush back as soon as I can!" I'm holding him now.

"I-It's alright, sensei… I-… I'll see you when you get back…" I cannot help but pick up the doubt in his voice.

"You will…" I'm holding him so tight I have to remind myself that he's injured and to be gentle so as not to hurt him, but he doesn't seem to mind. "Lee, I don't want to think this way, but… I can't loose you without you ever knowing…" Suddenly, I can't seem to find my words.

"Sensei?" I can feel his little heart pounding against my chest. The scent of his shampoo from his hair fills my nose and the feeling that has become far too familiar washes over me once more.

"Lee, I-… I don't know how to say this… Please… forgive me for what I'm about to do…" He looks up at me and I see those beautiful eyes again. This is my only chance. Slowly and softly, I meet his lips to mine and for a brief second it is like there's nothing else in the world. I know that what I'm doing is wrong and that my actions are probably only confusing him, but I can't seem to help it. I love this boy with every fibre of my being and no matter how hard I try to shut away my feelings, it's a battle that I always seem to loose. Finally, I pull away and immediately turn my back; I can't bear to face him. "I'm so sorry…" With that, I ran off to start my mission, never looking back. Be here when I get back, Lee… be here when I get back.
