In yet another one of their parents attempt at getting them together, Ranma and Akane found themselves alone in the house with the entire family finding one reason or another to be somewhere else. Ranma didn't mind at all. It's nice to have some peace and quiet at home. Now if only he and Akane could get along then the evening would be perfect. They had a nice quiet dinner that Kasumi had prepared for them before leaving the house and after cleaning up, Akane decided to watch a scary movie. Ranma wonders why Akane insists on scaring herself by watching horror movies, but with nothing better to do, he decides to join her. The evening is progressing well so far. Dinner had started out peacefully and they haven't had a single argument yet. IT seems like both Ranma and Akane are determined to remain civil towards each other. As the movie progressed, Ranma noticed that Akane had started to bundle herself up in the blanket. Obviously she was starting to get scared and he couldn't help but notice that she would periodically jump a little from fright. Ranma sat closer to Akane and slowly put his arm around her. He was cautiously waiting for her reaction, afraid that any moment now he was going to get pounded but as the seconds go by with nothing happening, he realized that Akane wasn't protesting. So they sat in that position until the movie ended. Akane turned to Ranma and thanked him for the gesture. She did not understand what had prompted him to put his arm around her but she was grateful nonetheless. It was comforting to feel his presence so near and to know that she is safe with him around. It's rare that she and Ranma get to enjoy quiet time like tonight and she was sorry it had to end but it was late and they both have to go to sleep.
On their way up to their rooms, Akane was relishing the thought of Ranma protecting her when his voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Honestly Akane, I don't understand why you like watching horror movies when all they ever do is scare you to death. It makes you even more jumpy and nervous, especially at night."
"I can't explain it, I really enjoy the suspense as well as the storyline even when it frightens me. Besides, I don't mind getting scared because I know you'll be there to protect me."
Akane said this last bit softly and shyly. Ranma almost missed hearing it but he was happy to reply:
"Always Akane, I will always be here to protect you.
Akane went to bed and as Ranma closed her door, Akane half-awake, half-asleep murmured: "Promise me you'll never tire of protecting me."
To which Ranma easily replied "Never"
