The comforting whirl of the washing machine was music to her ears. The low soothing notes drew her back into a time of bliss and of ignorance. She chuckled to herself.
If you could call it ignorance.
As her mind drifted back to memories of forgotten days, she was suddenly jerked awake as she heard muffled footsteps. The grin came back to her face, for the first time in weeks.
She hummed a few bars of a long forgotten song to herself. Her voice sulked into the darkness, and soon a much lower voice echoed back the notes.
"Morning Love" The other voice said as he sat down next to her. "Thinking about the old days, are we?"
She was used to his teasing. But she stuck out her tongue anyway. He laughed. She loved hearing his laugh, it reminded her of the old times - his careless, boyish ways and his never ending pursuit to gain her heart. Her... ability to say no, all those times. Sighing, she glanced at the clock.
"Really, you need to find a new hobby." He said, staring out the window at the sunrise.
"Oh, what's wrong with this hobby?" She questioned pointlessly, she already knew the answer but she loved to hear it.
"Well." He drawled. "For one thing, this lack of sleep isn't good for your health. And for another, it isn't good for my health either."
"Hmm." She replied as he kissed her forehead.
"Well, " He said, standing up. "Harry will be up in a moments time, care to have breakfeast any time soon?"
"Well, not if you cook it." She laughed - forced laughter, but laughter-non-the-less.
"Oy woman, you are going to be the death of me." She smiled. Maybe ... the past didn't have to be forgotten. Maybe they could have a future. Or maybe, they wouldn't... Maybe this was all too good to be tru-
"Lily?" He asked tentatively, noticing her absent stare. She sighed, and lifted her arms up - motioning for him to help her up.
"Yes, James?" She asked, lingering in his embrace.
"I love you."
"I love you too, James" She whispered, the words barely audible as she buried her head in his shirt and cried.
