"Why would you need to roam the earth?" Zeus had asked Hades.

"You belong in the underworld, brother. Your travels to the world of the living cause nothing but chaos. You have no business with them."

Hades would disagree with that. Especially since he laid eyes on her.

The first time he'd seen her was a coincidence. After a reluctant meeting with his brother he was on his way back to his kingdom. As he walked through the forest and wandered under the shadows of tall, large trees, his mind drifted back to their discussion.

"You have to maintain the balance between our worlds. Do not neglect your responsabilities for the sake of wonder and pleasure." Zeus had repeated. He was one to talk. All the same, Hades hadn't argued further. He already did as he pleased. And for all he knew, the balance between the worlds was perfect. The dead remained where they belonged, did they not?

Hades wasn't entirely happy about constantly being reminded of his place. He had told his brother he would not come up on earth unless it was necessary for him to do so. Now he had little time before he returned to underworld. All the same, his eyes, as they often did, involuntarily searched for some form of life and light as if to bring back with him.

The sight came before the sound of her song.

He was struck when he saw her. Silenced by the sight of that beautiful, delightful young goddess with flowers in her hair. There she stood, her green dress curled around her legs as she bent and picked daisies and laughed at her own failed attempt to do so without stumbling. Her bare feet were pale and beautiful. Her ankles were delicate. She reached down and picked another flower, a lily this time. As she slowly turned and saw a narcissus flower she sighed with delight. "Beautiful" she said. Her voice was honey and sunlight. Hades felt his heart suddenly ache with some sort of sensation he could not name. His lips slightly opened but he could do nothing, say nothing. He simply watched her for those couple of moments in which he felt like the time had frozen still.

Running through the fields full of colors with the sun on her face, she shone as if she was made of pure goodness and light.

Hades felt the horrible envy capture his eternal soul in freezing cold and found that he was envious of sunlight. Envious of the wind caressing her curls. He stood in the darkness as she turned and danced by herself to a song only she seemed to be able to hear. When she suddenly stopped and noticed his presence he was startled, having forgotten he was visible and could be seen by her.

He boldly raised his eyes to meet hers. Yet when she looked at his face questioningly he couldn't say a thing to greet her, and she stared deep into his dark eyes, as if she was seeing into his soul.

They both stood still as they gazed at one another. Her lips opened slightly but before she could speak she was distracted by her friend who was calling her.

"Kore!"

She looked away from Hades and Hades burned. Inside he realized, he had never felt like he was truly seen the way she was looking at him , or as lonely as when she looked away.

Before he could make sense of this and speak to her he realized he was not allowed to interact with the living unless necessary. Goddess or not, she was a part of the world he did not belong in.

When she turned to look at him again Hades was invisible. As she slowly turned around and her eyes searched for him, he smiled to himself.

She stood still for another moment before she called back to her friend.

"I'm coming Diana!"

Kore, he thought. Zeus and Demeter's daughter. The Goddess of Nature, the power, the beauty and the grace of it.

And he was going to see her again.

A/N: Kore used to be Persephone's name before she was abducted by Hades.
