The Thing Hugo Found

A Lost Fanfic

A/N: This little oneshot was inspired by shilom's "What is it?" contest on . I was a finalist, it was exciting. Enjoy!

"Dude, what is it?"

"Well, it's certainly not a van."

"That's obvious, Mr. One Hit Wonder."

Charlie glared at him. "Do you think we should help it?"

Sawyer grabbed his shirt collar and pulled him back. "Are you nuts?"

"Yeah, Dude," Hurley agreed. "I really don't think we should be messing with anything in the creepy island jungle."

"But it's just laying there," Charlie argued. "It could be hurt."

Charlie started easing his way down the incline.

"What? Are you a monster veterinarian now?" Sawyer yelled down to him.

"Hey, man, why are you even here?" Hurley asked him.

Sawyer considered the question for a moment. "I couldn't just let the Spaghetti and Meatball go into the jungle unprotected."

"What were you going to protect us with?" Charlie yelled up. "An unloaded gun?"

Sawyer rolled his eyes. "Fine. You don't want my help, I'll just leave."

Hurley watched as his surly friend disappeared into the trees. He turned back around in great trepidation. "Charlie, man, I really think we should leave now."

"I just want to see if it's okay."

"Okay? How are you going to know if it's okay? You don't even know what it is!"

"Sometimes you can just tell."

"Oh, God," Hurley said to the sky.

Charlie timidly stretched his hand out to the mass of leaves and fur. It snapped at him and he yelped--a bit more girlishly than he would have liked--and leapt back. In Hurley's haste to get away, he fell backward onto his rather rotund posterior.

"What's going on?" Sawyer asked, reappearing from the trees.

"I dunno," Hurley answered, attempting to get up.

Sawyer peered over the edge of the incline. The fallen rock star was on the ground laughing while an animal that looked like a cross between a grizzly bear and a dog licked his face.

"Dude, what is it?" Hurley repeated after he managed to stand up.

"It's an Irish Wolfhound," Charlie announced, delighted. "The largest dog in the world."

"You can say that again, Jeff," Sawyer said. "How did it get here."

"How does anything get here?" Charlie replied.

"Good point," Sawyer answered.

"We should go back to the beach and tell Vincent he's got some competition," Hurley said, smiling.
