Title: Gray
Pairing: Taang
Rating: G
Description: Like trying to describe color to a blind person.
Author's Note: I'm trying out a new style of writing. I like how it came out. :)
Warning: This is the first time I've written Toph, I'm not sure if she's in character or not.
What was his eye color?
The thought had sprung up in my mind every once in a while. But every single time, the paranormal feeling of not truly being able to understand filled my body.
I will never understand.
Ever.
He did owe me, though.
I taught him; he should teach me, right?
But I only rarely think of these thoughts, because life traveling with him, and his friends, and that giant furry creature they call transportation, and that insane firebender with her confusing brother and kind, tea drinking uncle is much too hectic for thoughts about such simple things as color.
What color are your eyes?
Sudden questions out of the blue always seem to startle him. At times making me chuckle.
W-What?You heard me, Twinkle Toes! What color are your eyes?
I felt no embarrassment, even though he was my student; he was the Avatar; he was a boy!
They're gray.
Gray…
What does gray look like?
I could feel him hesitate; feel his heart beat flutter slightly; feel his hands clench and unclench.
Well, it's a pale color. Ah… Kind of silver-ish, except not shiny…
He had trailed off, leaving me just as clueless as I was before.
What does silver look like?
We both were silent: me waiting, him thinking.
So?
I know it came out harsh; it was intentional. I wasn't going to wait all day for him to describe a single color!
Sorry Toph, I can't…
What is that supposed to mean, Twinkley?
I-I just can't. I don't know how to explain silver to you.
His voice lowered, as did his head.
I'm sorry.
We are both quiet again.
What color are my eyes?
He paused again, making me frown and tap my foot impatiently on the ground.
They're kind of a gray-green color.
I couldn't help but grin. I had no idea what green was, or gray for the fact of the matter, but I liked the so-called color of my eyes. If only I were able to see them, I would truly be satisfied, but really, I can live without it, I suppose. For now, I suppose I'll just have to trust Aang's word and enjoy him and I sharing something other than earth bending: the gray that was within our eyes.
